What the hardware renderer puts out is vastly different from what the game actually looks like. A hell of a lot of games have to be played on software to get an accurate reproduction. I think it's post processing effect. However, different doesn't always mean worse. I found that some games or some scenes looked awesome in hardware mode even if they were different from the renderings on the actual console. It depends on the player's preference. When you used hardware mode and had problems, did you try to use HW hacks? Many problems can be fixed. I hope at least you use FXAA in software mode. It improves the image quality a little bit.
