Pretty soon i7s will be like semperons and crysis will be like tetris lol

RE: 6 core cpus?!?! - dariocheca - 07-28-2009

that's insane! 16 cores??? c'mon! I still use a single core cpu... i know that 16 cores monster is for servers but i will like to have one... is there a linux that supports that thing?

its not even on the market yet

RE: 6 core cpus?!?! - DacoTaco - 07-28-2009

i dont think ppl realise servers often use 2 cpu's . so if the i7 had a server version it would be 2x8 = 16 (which 8 are physical and 8 HT which also gets me to the case that there is no real 8 core, only 4 cores and 4 hyperthreaded cores)

so there are only 4 cores and the other 4 are hyperthreaded... that the system derived from physical cores? so they are like virtual cores???

i dont know anything about cpus and cores -.- im lost

easy
altho i had some nice images about it i think i lost them
but here is some more images about it
(early awnser : hyperthreading is indeed somekinda like a virtual core by running 2 threads at once on 1 core. so it does the same as a dual core cpu but less fast cause its using the resources of one core ; unlike a dual core cpu which has 2x the resources cause it has 2 physical cores)

single core:
[Image: CPU_single_thread2.jpg]

single core and single core while hyperthreading:
[Image: single_core_single_and_hyper_thread.gif]
this results in the computer believing it has more then 1 core, which is just a virtual core

dual core:
[Image: Dual_Core.jpg]
1 chip, 2 cores, 2 threads (each core 1 thread)
if you have hyperthreading on a dual core its 1 chip, 2 physical cores , 4 threads (each physical core 2 threads)
if you have hyperthreading on a quad core (like the i7) its 1 chip, 4 physical cores , 8 threads(each physical core 2 threads)

and to explain what i said earlier, most servers have multiple cpu's(chips) installed on top of the cpu's (which are multi-core) they are using. so thats why i said if the i7 had a server version they could easily result in 8 physical and 8 hyperthreaded cores cause it would be 2 i7's
2 i7's means 2 x ( 4 physical cores + 4 hyperthreading )
<=> 2 x 8
<=> 16

Eh, I'll settle with an i7. Plays Crysis like it's going out of style. Now we only need the GTX 3xx series and Crysis will be a thing of the past. :3

Intel i9 Gulftown 32 nm 6 core 12 threads , Dual Cpu motherboard ! Gives you 24 Threads !

I dont see the point in hyperthreading
