Gamecube controller not recognised - mosis - 05-30-2013

Hi, I have just bought a USB to Gamecube adaptor, this type, from Ebay:

http://www.supremefactory.com/supreme/images/cn-uni-gcca-big.jpg

and a Gamecube compatible controller.

I am using Windows 8, and in the Game Controllers section of Windows, all the buttons register and work fine.

In Dolphin, when I go to the Gamecube Pad Settings page, I can't get anything on the screen to react when I press any of the buttons. I have five possible devices appearing,

DInput/0/Keyboard Mouse
DInput/0/USB GamePad
DInput/1/USB GamePad
SDL/0/USB GamePad
SDL/1/USB GamePad

It doesn't matter which one I select, none of them make any of the buttons (ABXYZSM) react, but my PC keyboard does, if I press X, Z, C, S, D etc. (even while I'm typing this, in fact!)

I tried ticking 'Background Input', but that doesn't work either.

When I right click on any of the grey boxes in the Dolphin GCPad Configuration page, I get a 'Configure Control' box, and if I then press 'Detect', and move or click any of the controller's buttons or joysticks, it registers it correctly, and so I see 'Axis Y+' selected if I move one of the joysticks, etc.

Surely I don't have to manually set every single part of the controller, and this should already be set up as standard somehow? I've got 30 years of computer experience but this has foxed me, I'm sure it's easy and I'm missing something. Can anybody help? Many thanks.

You aren't giving a lot of information here. Are the controller settings cleared when you close and reopen dolphin? Are the setting retained but no longer work after the computer goes into standby or reboots? Have you tried creating a controller profile? Dolphin saves controller inputs automatically, so this is an odd problem. We need as much information on what you are doing as you can provide.

That doesn't sound very official. Considering those adapters are hackishly made for the official controllers, and unofficial controllers are hackishly made for the gamecube, I get the feeling that the combination could be the cause of your problems.

UGH I'm so sick of that number. Get your builds from the official site, which you can reach by pressing "Download" at the top of the forums. The latest as of this writing is 3.5-1387, over a thousand revisions newer than that.

Yeah, you do have to manually set each button. Silly and time-consuming, yeah, but it's not too easy for an app to find out how to automatically map the buttons for the millions of gamepads and adapters out there. It's already hard enough to get HID input working properly with most devices in the first place, from what I hear...

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought he had to reset them every time. Ooops, I guess I have too much faith in people.

Thanks for much for your help guys! I didn't realise that I had to manually set each button/joystick, but I've now managed to do them all! Thanks for telling me about how old my version was Major, I don't remember where I downloaded it from, I've got the latest version from this site now. Amazing stuff, thanks to whoever makes Dolphin, it's fantastic.

Make sure you press "Refresh" after changing your device. You should then be able to setup the controls by simply clicking on the buttons and pressing buttons on your gamepad.
No need to enter the detect dialogue.

Uh, there's also the save feature :3. All you would have to do is it once, then load the save for the others (make sure to change the controller input tho).
