it's the matter of portability. it's easier to carry around and do my works outside of my home for group assignments, etc. taking notes with laptops are more convenient imo, and a good way to slack off in a boring / easy class
then again i'm in a journalism major and bound to have something portable to do assignments and such :/

I guarantee you most of your professors are going to get pretty pissed if you try to do that. Nobody wants to hear somebody clacking away on his keyboard in the middle of a lecture (depending on the size of the class, in a larger class it's ok, although pointless).
