Even if AMD had a vastly superior superior microarchitecture (which they have had many times before) they still wouldn't be able to crush intel because they simple lack the manufacturing power to provide to major vendors like dell and hp in large quantities. That's what happened with athlon 64, everyone wanted a piece of it but they had to turn them down....kind of sad looking back. And actually intel didn't have to buy the licensing rights for A64 because intel and amd have adual patent agreement which is strictly upheld. Simple put any technology developed by either one belongs to both. But with global foundries new manufacturing plant on schedule to be up and running in 2011 amd will finally have the manufacturing power to provide to major vendors in large quantities. So the next time amd pulls another A64....well I don't even need to say anything else.

You forgot to mention how Athlon XP had more than 50% more performance per clock than pentium 4 in both integer and floating point math on average. Not to mention is did it with a much smaller architecture that consumed less power and had a much lower tdp. It was both more powerful and more efficient. I had a desktop with P4 northwood 2.5 Ghz and a system with an athlon xp 1.8 GHz and I can tell you my athlon xp system ran rings around the pentium 4.

In my city, I bought only processor of shipment of AMD....That's AMD Athlon 64....only single processor in the city...:O

India homes the population of atleast 1.02 billion people. Atleast, you can say even 1% of people, that's 10 million people are willing to purchase a new PC, including me...
(few months back). If AMD had similar marketing tactics, even they had once aired their commercial during FIFA worldcup and told about their processor is superior than Intel, atleast 5 million people would had bought that. It is cheaper than Intel, so more had bought that. That should had added to their revenue and their market standings....But does AMD cares...?

Yeah, I had made comparison only between the first Athlon XP and first P4 series. I said it seems that Intel is quite a winner, in terms of frequency I forgot...:p

What do you want to do with your computer? If only video gaming and dolphin emulation, a newer athlon x2 processor or core 2 duo / core i3 is decent enough.
If you need to do cpu intensive tasks like video rendering or 3d modelling that uses every thread available, get a core i5/7 processor. If time and efficiency is a professional issue then you shouldn't bother with amd except with maybe the top range phenom II's or the 6-core 1090T. Practically no company that renders with Sony Vegas for example uses anything else than i7 processors. Many even use dual xeon 16-core workstations for long rendering overnight.
For pure video gaming or film watching there is no significant difference. I have a phenom on my htpc because it's price efficient for bluray decoding, but wouldn't use it for work related stuff.
That's your opinion. Not going to debate you on it because it would be pointless but as you know I have a different opinion.

Also I don't think raw processing power is an opinion since no matter how objective you try to be, AMD processors are not suitable for professional cpu-heavy applications compared to IBM cell blades and intel processors due to relatively low performance.
I've done 3D rendering for some 4 and ½ years and after doing consulting and onsite development never have I seen a company whose studio uses amd in the workstations
