This is the first version of ubuntu I have ever used that I honestly believe is a step backwards from the previous version. And most of the reputable review sites seem to either agree with me or have mixed feelings.
My problem with it is that it:
-includes pulseaudio
-has lots of buggy software (it's not thoroughly tested and most of the new software should still be in beta quite frankly)
-2D/3D performance has been sliced in half somehow with nvidia forceware 195 versus 9.10
-openoffice, gimp, and many other important software packages have been removed only to be filled with social networking and cloud software
-many more that I will list later

i still have openoffice & gimp on my ubuntu machine after the upgrade :/
also the reason they did that was cause they couldn't fit it on a CD otherwise
and if you really want those apps then go apt-get them (srry, sudo apt-get)

I know but the very concept of not having them on the live disc is ridiculous. Can you honestly think of a popular distro that doesn't have openoffice on the live cd image?

i sure dont
and it is on the live cd...just not directly
(how hard can it be to run 2 commands once you booted the live cd)06-08-2010, 01:33 AM

It's probably the second most used application on linux, behind firefox. Is that not sufficient reason for it to be there out of the box? And as for just running two commands, your missing my point. The fact that it isn't on there goes against the core ubuntu philosophy of having what you need right out of the box. The fact that I actually need to download one of the most common applications (which is over 300MB in size and on my crappy internet that takes a really long time to get) as soon as I boot it up the first time tells me right from the get go what kind of experience I'm going to have with this distro. How would you feel if FIREFOX was not included? I think that would go so far as to actually make linux users openly rebel against the decision instead of blindly accepting every decision they make as "it must be better because it's newer". Maybe I'm overreacting but if they keep doing this as a trend instead of having this remain one bad decision it will clearly show that they are going in the wrong direction.

seriously, linux doesn't come with pidgin, good audio player, wine or ssh deamon.
do you see me whine about the slogan?
also, the philosophy of ubuntu is what their sticker says "linux for human beings"
and if firefox wouldn't be included i'd go wtf, shut up and do sudo apt-get install firefox.
yes , imo you are overreacting. and like i said... they had no choice. they needed to remove programs from the live cd(or installation) cause it was taking to much space on the CD. why use a CD? cause alot of computers around the world dont have DVD drives , let alone DL compatible DVD drives.
and im sorry for your connection but isn't it about time to upgrade? i dont think that many ppl now have such a bad connection that 300MB is a pain in the ass :/

I can't upgrade. I have the best connection an isp offers in my area and it's still crap. Unless I move out of state I will never be able to pass 1 mb/s. And unfortunately I can't leave me computer on all night because it's loud as hell and makes it impossible for me to sleep.

That's a little harsh don't you think? I might have a different opinion than you but that doesn't make me your enemy. All I did was answer your question with my honest opinion:

......most of my linux distros have a good audio player and wine preinstalled. Some have pidgin and ssh daemon. But that's a little different because all distros have a good im client of some type, for example some have kopete instead of pidgin but it has the same level of functionality. Openoffice on the other hand has no equivalent alternative, if you take it out you lose some functionality. Which is fine if it's a minimalist distro. What distro do you use?
