Strong enough magnet works like a charm, read that some warez groups actually keep this stuff near their server racks so they can just put them over the HDD's in case of getting busted
It would probably take a very strong one to corrupt data entirely so that even a police lab can't read it with their equipment, probably not something available for puchase in your average hardware store..

I remember seeing those things on kotaku and thought of getting one, it had a big metal box with plastic covers around some flip switches, and the side had a skull, it looked kick ass but then i thought people would think I was a pedophile that needed to delete my kiddy porn on the fly just in case, so I didn't get it
And I don't think it was a magnet, it something that frys totally your hdds electrically, I saw an episode of mithbusters that proved you need way too much magnetic force to get rid of data on an hdd so a portable device that just magnetizes your hdds to get rid of the data without fucking up your entire PC is not possible.

yeah I must be confused cause now that you mention it I do remember the credit card episode and roughly something about hdds but not sure if it was the mithbusters.

I have a 12" sub-woofer near my PC, I'd better watch out and be sure my hard drive does not delete.
