also, the guy made up his mind, he's getting the 955. why are you still doing amd vs intel wars?it's gonna be endless! Sad
you don't wanna end up like this do you????
175 pages of intel vs amd wars! holly $h1t

That point is moot and juvenile. There is no 'better' one except in maybe terms of raw performance if you go in the $1000+ price range. Both amd and intel make excellent processors for gaming and normal use.

In fact, I also picked a phenom II x4 for my htpc because it offered similar performance for various tasks such as bluray playback and h.264 decompressing as intel, but for a much lower price point and cheaper mobo.

The vast majority of zealous 'fanboys' are kids who got a present PC from their parents and feel like they have been sent on a holy crusade to stamp all disbelievers that come in their way (people with intel/amd cpu).

It's just like the 'console wars'. The loudest people are those deranged loonies who simply can't afford all three and keep insulting the other ones for no rational reason. Brand loyalty is just a disease. You should always pick whatever is the most efficient at the time.
exactly! that's why i didn't wanna go further with this thread. each company has it's own ups and downs period
I really found this to be funny, I laughed at some of the posts, but I'm surprised this topic got to 7 pages lol.
The PC I'm wanting to build is for PC gaming overall, as I'm a gamer and stuff =P, but for now I'm going to have to get the 945 later I might get the 965 or the 1090T (Thuban), the motherboard supports it so I can get it if I need to =).
well, in my experience, amd chips are cooler but don't clock as high, while intel chips are hotter but clock much better if cooled well. Clock for clock, nehalem is still 15-30% faster.
Hm...I thought the AMD chips were the ones to heat up more, that might be the older ones I don't know =P.
I have a laptop with an AMD CPU and it really heats up when I play games (I already know why because there is no cooling in it) but i tried an Intel CPU and it didn't heat up as much with the same game, I don't remember what model the Intel was but it was from the same year as my Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 @ 1.70Ghz, well I'm talking in inexperience with AMD and Intel CPUs sense I've always had AMD =/.

this is partially true, but it depend as :
- Thuban the new AMD 6-core can clock as high as 4.5GHz on air if you're lucky.
- Intel chip is hotter yes, but that is if you're talking about Nehalem. Generally core 2, i3 and i5 is very cool chips even while overclocked.
There are few differences between Nehalem and Thuban that makes Nehalem somewhat 'superior' in performance, but in current conditions, like availability and PRICE, Thuban 'overdominate' Nehalem.
Pros
-Gulftown is currently an Extreme Edition Processor, so it's available at $999/- but you get Thuban at $295/-
-Motherboard compatibility
-It's AMD!! LOL
-On AnandTech = The Core i7 980X is such a difficult processor to recommend. It's something I'd personally never spend the money on. But if I needed more compute in a single chip, it's really the only thing that could scratch that itch.
-Turbo Core helps to utilise specific thread...
Cons
-45 nm arc. against gulftown 32 nm arc.(core i7 980X)
-no hyperthreading
-somewhat heated overclocking
-Lower threaded apps. lags in performance even by a Dual Core CPU

After seeing prices, you can either go for 1090T @ $295 or 1055T @ $199...
If you see for future and want to set this rig for a long time...

Or else, for NOW gaming, you can have Clarkdale Core i5 quad cores..or like that...

It's your choice...

Can we rename this forum as Intel vs. AMD...
or I should make a new one..?
Uh hello? Nehalem isn't limited to Gulftown (in fact all core i series IS Nehalem), 920 is more than a match for Thuban. Each CPU has its up and down, there's no clear winner here, it all boil down to your needs and preferences really.

Nice one when talking about OC Intel and AMD.

While we're on the subject: I've got an i5 430M in my laptop. Any chance I could safely OC that one, without frying absolutely everything? I mean, as has been stated here, i5 CPUs don't get really hot when overclocked, but still, it's a laptop.
That pun wasn't intended :p

I wouldn't want to oc a laptop to be on the safe side, but you could try incrementing it a little bit at a time while monitoring your max temp using oc test program like occt, prime or linpack.

though usually oc-ing a laptop mean killing any energy saving like speedstep and may involve disabling some extra bios option which i'm not familiar with, maybe other member have more experience with this?
