better ipc, sure Phenom can run most games fine but when you consider other emulator (pcsx2) and some of the most intensive dolphin title (zelda TP hyrule field) the investment for i7 is worth it, or if you don't mind, an overclocked i5 will suffice too.
really it's worth it in the long run. and btw i7 920 is anything from 200 to 300 depend on where you live and i never said anything about buying 980x. (?)

i know that. but the phenom thuban is 2x better than an i7 920. it's 6 core, it's faster, better overclock(up to 4.6ghz), better compatibility( AM3 socket boards, very common), and almost same price. ~300$
So, you still think intel is better? no, i'm not a fanboy.
Zelda TP hyrule field? max fps in 1024x768, bout 50% speed 1920x1080 (my friend's dad works for amd, i know what it's capable of)
It's not faster clock for clock, sorry check your fact.
Your friend's dad has nothing to do with it, check any benchmark available and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying that AMD is slow nor X6 is a bad product, no, it's just that right now even Intel i5 is faster clock for clock than Phenom II X6 in app where 4 cores, let alone 6, doesn't chime in, like dolphin.
what do you mean my friend's dad has nothing to do with it? XD
he gets a product from amd each month as a great employee, one of them was the above thuban. He actually compared it clock for clock with the 920(my friend's pc) (both at 4 ghz) The thuban won by 5-10 fps in normal pc games, and some less in dolphin. but then again, thuban at 4ghz is nothing. that guy's been made to be overclocked.
Wouldn't mind buying a Thubane Might get one shortly sounds like a new toy for me.

Well whatever he is, doesn't change the fact that clock for clock even i3 (ah screw it, even Core 2 Penryn) is faster than x6, like I said check various tech website if you even bother, this is a proven fact.
Oh and as for that benchmark, did they use a completely identical setup (except for the board ofc), btw at above certain resolution, unless you're using x-fire/sli where Intel will once again reign, CPU doesn't matter at all in games.
Sorry, like I said check again various site on the net, majority of people, sans fanboy, will agree that overall (except in certain case) Intel is faster than AMD and of course, pricier.

TBH and i hate to admit it hes right AMD Lost its crown awhile back hasnt performed up to par in years.
But that's exactly why we got lots of price/performance champ cpu these days, so yeah I don't really know how to feel about the situation.

My reason for choosing amd alone is price. I dont have 1000 Bucks lying around to get 19fps more out of a game when i can take a 300$ cpu and OC it to get maybe 9 FPs less. TBH i think intels prices are BS. But hows that phrase go "YOu get what you pay for"

Those two processors are similar in value, but shouldn't he go for whatever brand his motherboard supports?
