I totally agree with your statement that stupid people shouldn't reproduce. However, this situation was not an instance of natural selection in action. The gun was left out by the girl's stepfather, so she had no blood relation. Therefore, the conclusion that one more stupid person was removed from the gene-pool can't be drawn because the victim wasn't derived from the stupid person at fault.
The actual weapon and its imitation do look very similar. and if viewed from several feet away by an untrained eye, many people would be hard-pressed to distinguish the two.

Exactly, that means the girl fell victim to someone else's pool of stupidity.
