Yes it works but you won't get 3D with HD3D alone :
Dolphin does not interface directly with HD3D (it does not interface directly with 3D vision either).
What this patch does is to change the way fullscreen mode works so that the Nvidia 3d Vision display driver can use it.
Once this is done, the 3D Vision rendering driver hijacks the DirectX rendering pipeline, records everything the Dolphin DirectX graphics plugin calls and converts the rendering in stereo3D.

On the AMD side, the driver that records the graphics calls and converts them in stereo3D (third party drivers iZ3D and DDD) is separate from the display driver (AMD HD3D).
The iZ3D and DDD drivers do not need the fullscreen mode to work but HD3D does need it.
this is fantastic!! i have tryd mario galaxy 2 , epic mickey , new super mario bros and smash brawl, with the exception of new super mario all the others look outstanding on my 3dtv i exclude mario cause altho it has amazing 3d in the level select screen, its not very 3dness while actually in the levels.
any way to play dolphin games in 3D on a regular 3DTV (i have a new panasonic tv with glasses) ? im guessing this is for nvidia and the tv's that happen to support their glasses?

Yep! If you have an nvidia card, you can use their 3DTV play software to use their drivers with your TV and the glasses that you already have:

you're right.. in fact i remember i checked this when i got the TV like 2 months ago, and my TV wasn't listed, but it's been added to the supported models now, nice.

$39.99 though, and no trial? kind of sucks i have to say, would like to test it first.

if you could manage to get some red/blue glasses, you could try out everything you want on a monitor using the free "3d vision discover" mode, and then pull the trigger on the 3D TV Play software if everything works out.

EDIT: actually, on a closer look, there is a 14-day trial.
edit: Works pretty well i have to say.. i thought i'd get a massive slowdown, but nope.
You can also use the iZ3D driver. It has a 30 days trial.

Regarding performance, it depends on the games. The theory says 3D requires 2x the load on the graphics card. However Dolphin has a huge bottleneck in the emulation of the Gamecube/Wii components.
Whether or not you'll get a huge performance drop depends on where this bottleneck is located. In some games it's in the CPU emulation (almost zero incidence for 3D) in other games it's in the GPU emulation (1/2 performance drop), and finally other games it's something inbetween.
Played with it for a while but imo not really worth it, the effect is very vague compared to how it looks in PC games. I can emulate 2D to 3D on the TV itself, it's on pair with that effect.

What games are you trying? If it's on par with your TV's fake 2D-to-3D conversion, then something is horribly wrong with your setup. Some of the games are easily the best demonstration of 3D that I have ever seen (Metroid prime, mario galaxy, Zelda OoT + Majoras Mask come to mind)
