Nevertheless, the fact that dolphin relies more on CPU than GPU power would explain why ETA prime has reported such a performance gain.
When it comes to graphical demanding games, things might look different though.
I think a possible Snapdragon 888+ plus might remedy the poor GPU performance by switching to the Taiwanese node.

There were no noticeable performance gains from S865 my friend. I thought I made it clear in that post. ETA Prime simply lied about the S865 performance, I can tell from my own phone.

I'm looking forward for a decent S870 review. Motorola's Edge S launched at a very cheap price in China and India, and it's about to be launched here in Brazil. I suppose it'll be cheap here too. I might buy it or not, let's see if AMD Exynos shows up meanwhile. I might upgrade from this Poco F2 Pro if I can find a decent S870 with at least 12GB RAM and 90Hz screen (and a microsd slot too, I miss it too much).
I don't think the 870 will be any faster than the 888. The Anandtech review showed that at least concerning the CPU performance there is a gain.
So it seems that while not a huge jump, the 888 is still the best chip for emulation this year :/

You're missing the part where I imply the S888 has equivalent performance with S865, while S870 is a turbocharged S865 (MHz-wise). The clock crown is S870's nowadays, and as we concluded with all the info we gathered: for emus, clock is king (at least for now, with the currently available SoCs).

For the most part of the things I tested, the bottleneck was always the CPUs, not the GPUs. You'll never stress those GPUs if the 2 CPUs can't keep up the burden. Even when the AMD Exynos come out, I don't think it will do a lot more if it can't alleviate the CPU bottleneck. But it probably will have a lot more of OpenGL and Vulkan features than Adreno and Mali, so it's a good thing.
AMD Exynos should ideally include AMD’s Linux drivers, which would rightly destroy the speed and feature set of the drivers offered by Qualcomm or Mali (ARM). That would definitely be a speed bump even if the CPU remained the same. Driver speed is a big factor for dolphin.
Xiaomi Redmi K40 (vanilla): 12GB LPDDR5 Snapdragon 870 120hz screen for $388,00 launch price. That's close to the configuration I want for an upgrade: it's only missing a microsd slot.

Well you convinced me, I canceled my order for the s21 ultra and am gonna wait for a better SoC to surface.

I feel sorry for you my friend, but this generation is a big letdown for all of us. I believe we will see some real worthy upgrades when the AMD Exynos launch, the news are hot on it. In 3 months or so we'll know more, and hopefully some hardware in Q3 or Q4. Hang in there.
I am looking at this GPU chart https://www.anandtech.com/show/16614/xiaomi-mi-11-lite-5g-performance-report-first-taste-of-the-snapdragon-780/2 and try to judge.

The difference between SD 888 throttled and 865 is not tremendous, while 865 not throttled has a bit better performance, the 888 throttled has slightly better perf/W metric.
