Ok, here we go:
1. I don't know which Citra version he is using, but saying you couldn't scale to 2x in Snapdragon 865 is a plain LIE, I've been playing Super Mario 3d Land and Mario Kart 7 all the way up to 4x resolution scaling AND xBRZ Freescale texture scaling enabled TOGETHER (hell, even turning on Google Cardboard or side-by-side stereoscopics), and it rarely slows down EVEN WHEN THE PHONE GETS TOO HOT. I only scale down to 3x to preserve my battery (and because you can only tell the difference between 3x and 4x in a 1080p screen if you try really hard while having your phone attached to your face into a VR goggle)
2. I don't know which hacks and enhancements he's using in Dolphin, but for what he showed, it's the exact same performance as in S865. In fact, you can get Super Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and a lot other games to run in 20:9 widescreen Gecko code at 720P (2x) just fine in S865. I got REALLY disappointed that S888 couldn't scale up to 3x (1080p). Also it's a lie that you couldn't do 720p in S865. Maybe because he is trying to use Vulkan instead of OpenGL (Vulkan is slower indeed, but still playable with no slowdowns with decent tweaking at 720p)
3. The God of War 2 performance in Damon Ps2 Pro is the same in both S865 and S888.
After seeing that, I can say with 100% confidence: S888 is not that much better for emulation than S865. DON'T go for S888, try S870 instead (it's cheaper).
Citra @ 3x resolution + xBRZ freescale textures, no speed limiter (Poco F2 Pro/S865):

I ordered an S21 ultra from HK, so we will know how it compares to the 855 soon.

My thoughts exactly, and it’s what I’ve been hoping people will realize. 865/870 is going to remain the champ of sorts. 888 is not efficient enough to extract any performance gains in passively cooled mainstream phones.

Without actually owning the device this is all just conjecture.
After watching this youtube video for example, one might think the snapdragon 888 only overheats in the xiaomi11, which is the most common 888 phone at the moment.

Either way, rest assured I will test the cpu thoroughly once it arrives here, but from the looks of it I still think the snapdragon 888 is the best choice for dolphin Emulation at the moment.

Anandtech is already planning to review it and they’ll provide far more data then you or I. Beyond that we already have some power figures for the chip, and its not looking good for the Samsung 5nm SoC’s
Anandtech's reviews are legendary. Checking their site daily for an update.
Uff, Samsung's Fab process really seems to be the culprit here. They are just inferior in everyway.
Nevertheless, the fact that dolphin relies more on CPU than GPU power would explain why ETA prime has reported such a performance gain.
When it comes to graphical demanding games, things might look different though.
I think a possible Snapdragon 888+ plus might remedy the poor GPU performance by switching to the Taiwanese node.
