The savestates WILL be broken between STABLE updates e.g. 4.0.2 and 5.0 (and if it ever comes out 6.0). That said, you should currently not be using the stable anymore as it is 3 1/4 years old now and there have been over 10.000 fixes and improvements (almost 11.000 now) since that version which makes the development version actually MORE stable than the stable version (5.0)
