I've noticed a strange quirk in dolphin, when I plug my laptop into my tv through hdmi I notice significant performance drops in dolphin. My laptop usually runs games fine on it's own, typically in 1080p. What's weirder is if I use extended dispay mode and click around on the screen that doesn't have dolphin on it, dolphin starts running perfectly. (I assuume this is a side effect of dolphin no longer being "in focus")
This isn't really a viable solution as my controller stops working with dolphin when this is done. (Though my wiimote and dolphin bar still work.)
So if you can enlighten me as to what's happening here I'd be very grateful and even if you can't thank you for taking the time to read this.
Isn't it normal that you notice performance problems if you use extended display? I mean your graphics card have to do the job for 2 displays now. Why don't you try to use the TV only and let your laptop screen go black? Worth a try.

... or, rather, if the HDMI connector is tied to a crappy GPU instead of a beefy one.
Have you tried making the TV the primary screen? Also, there's the background input option, that allows using a controller with Dolphin, even when Dolphin is not in focus.

That was the first thing I did, extended display was my path to solution, not the problem. I'll look into the background input thing though.

Extended display is the solution here, not the problem. The issue was found using one display.
I meant that you should try using the tv as primary screen when extending the display. The last time i messed with several displays, only the primary got hardware graphics acceleration. Not having that should result in a dramatic performance reduction. No idea why clicking around on the other screen would fix the performance though.

I understand your confusion but I am using the tv as the primary screen, It is weird that clicking around on the other screen would have an effect but it does.
Perhaps you're locked on a lower refresh rate when using the TV as a sigle monitor? Already happened once with me, was at 24 Hz instead of 60 Hz...

Would that affect the audio too?

If you are using vsync, then yes, the game speed and audio speed and everything will drop.
