Full Version: Asus ROG Phone Dolphin performance

The ROG phone doesn't have a "heat pipe". If you look at a teardown (which are surprisingly hard to find for this phone!), there is a plate over the SoC that uses thermal paste to connect to a small copper plate on the shell. That's it. The piece of copper isn't even a heatsink, it's a completely flat plate of copper roughly the size of a penny. Maybe it's a tiny vapor chamber, but that's certainly not a heat pipe! On a proper heatsink and heatpipe set up, the heat pipes are literal *pipes* that use their length to carry heat away from the SoC and spread it across a massive surface area of a heatsink. This has neither surface area of a heatsink nor length of heatpipes to move the heat away from the SoC, and everything is just right there on top of the SoC. The fan accessory then blows on this flat penny sized piece of copper, and that's the only cooling it has. There is no thermal connectivity with the bulk of the phone's body at all, since the phone's glass back is entirely separate and not thermally bonded to the SoC, so it's only thermal transfer point is that flat piece of copper. Which makes the accessory that blows on the back of the phone a little silly.

Looking into it, this thermal setup is far worse than I thought it would be. The old way of doing this, which is an SoC thermally bonded with an aluminium back, would perform far better than this setup. Especially if combined with a third party fan grip accessory, which have always existed.

The guy with ROG Phone was using the official build with no heavy hacks. You probably use the custom build with some speedhack which gives you some performance advantages.
The video you mean about dolphin on Pocophone, the graphics setting resolution is set on 2x, about your config is set on 1x. This video stay on official builds, dolphin hack version don't released in time of video public. Rog phone won't able to beat Pocophone, it dont haver liquid cooling and this app you mean is just marketing bro.

The Pocophone doesn’t have liquid cooling. It’s setup is just as basic if not more.

I concede. I’m prepared to take the L on this one. You are absolutely correct, and that teardown makes it pretty clear. Relying entirely on a fan moving air around with no direct conduct is not going to be as effective. It’s still pretty competitive compared to the trash other phones use, but you are right. It’s not proper anything.

To put it shortly: the update brought fucked up drivers. Period.

If you´re using Android 9 you´ll have to use GL all the way (or roll back to Android 8 if you can).

The only "problem" is the Governor in PoCo F1.

The passive cooling system does his duty very well.

And NO, in my case, i use the emu, WithOUT the the Branch activated (disactivated).

PS: Look at the fps in the upper left corner (in PoCo benchmark), they are almost always at 30 fps and not at 20. (and without the "cool" CS)

in many of my games, I use 2x and shader filters enabled.

Correct, it's a vapor chamber.
And incorrect about the efficiency of the cooling. By utilizing a vapor chamber and cooling the vapor chamber direcly it actually acts like a standard cooling system desktops and notebooks are utilizing. Also you are incorrect about the actual size of the vapor chamber:
