Rene Wrote:To say an i7 is 'just as good' as a Phenom II with current Dolphin builds is pretty damn ignorant seeing as how it is not even as good as a Wolfdale, much less a Yorkfield.

Can u respond to this with respect to hte wolfdane/yorkfield vs phenomII?

$400-700, maybe more, maybe less..
Where did you get that quote? I don't see it anywhere in the thread. I ask because I strongly disagree with this comment and have the benchmarks/statistics to back it up. I have a friend with a phenom II X4 940, I have a friend with an I7 920, and I have a Q6600 (core 2 quad kentsfield) and I can easily say that the I7 easily destroys my Q6600 in dolphin even at a lower clock rate, and since it easy clocks to 3.8 GHz on air which is about as high as most yorksfields will go....well it's pretty obvious then that at the same clock rate it will destroy it even more. I need to go get my friend with the phenom 940 to run dolphin, then I'll post some benchmarks results.

BTW for the record I still do not recommend you get an I7 due to the price, simple not worth it at the moment.

i got that quote somewhere from the dolphin pc buying guide. not that it matters, just wanted to hear your response. not sure if i want a dual or triple core, still thinking about it (risks if a core doesnt unlock).

if you dont like the e8xxx, do you like this, since its intel? got a better option?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359

also this case (free pwer supply, though 480w does suck): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146059

also while we're at it, Arnt these Exactly the SAME internals?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340343%2050001028%204017&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&CompareItemList=N82E16819103727%2CN82E16819103696

Also, kinda shocked desktop ram seems x2 as much as laptop mem, which sucks. know about laptop mem, but again this is my first desktop so fairly uncharted territory. i will be running a 64bit rig --> 4gb ok, do i need 6?, again all with dolphin in mind. with vista, on my laptop there was a huge difference between 2gb and 3/4gb....
1. It doesn't really matter since the I7 would only be a little bit faster than a wolfsdale and possible slower than a yorksfield, so it's not a good choice for dolphin. And it costs a lot more. I just got angry because he said that it was stupid to say an I7 would perform as well as a wolfsdale, that is the stupidest thing I have ever seen someone type.

2. That link is to a mobo not a cpu.

3. First off NEVER EVER EEEVVVVEEERRR USE A PSU THAT CAME WITH A CASE!!!! EVER!!! If that thought even so much as touches your mind destroy it immediately! You will thank me when your power supply is still working after 4 years and didn't burn out your entire system (has never happened to me just saying it is a common occurrence, even a high school friend of mine experienced the pain).

4. Perhaps you sent me the wrong link again. That link sends me to a comparison between a Phenom 945 and 965. Very different internals, different clock rates and the 945 is not black edition.

5. Depends...you'll probably end up with a phenom due to your budget and in that case I would recommend 4GB since it's dual channel. Windows 7 is a memory hog just like vista but it's not as bad since it can use video ram as ram. We'll talk about this more when your online.

1. ya thats cool. it sounded stupid to me too, but i wanted to hear it from a more qualified source.

2. no that link is right. im totally lost on the mobo so i didnt know if intel was the way to go? or wat i should get...

3. OK! i have purged the heinous thoughts, and repented of my evil ways. i dont see much point in spending much on the case though...(i guess this 700w will do: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341019)

4. Again, that is the correct link. the reason i was confused was that when i compared them, the name and the operating freq. seemed like the only difference (ie, the series, socket type, core, hypertransport, cache are all the same.) Actually my real question is the comparison of the 955 and the 965 (a difference of $20 and 0.2ghz, which i figure i can clock up to anyway....).

5. ok so 4gb is probably good, we'll get to that later...
1. Normally I7 would destroy both of them but dolphin is not optimized for it at all. And dolphin is very cache dependent so yorksfields do very well for the same reason as phenoms, loads of cache.

2. I would always recommend ASUS first off, not that their aren't loads of other great mobo brands.
This is a great AMD board that I would highly recommend: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402

And just in case you decide to go that route here is a great intel board as well:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131297

3. Lol, ok. That link sent me to a list of OCZ power supplies not a specific one...although it doesn't really matter since OCZ is a really reputable brand with a top notch warranty.

4. Not really worth it in cost efficiency to most people, but then again that's not the point. If you've been buying cpu's for a few years you know what it's like, their is a certain point when you cross over to the "top tier" processors and every tiny increase in speed is a huge increase in price, it is simple how cpu's have been marketed.

5. Yeah

Video cards: i dont need a gtx260, do i? isnt it overkill for dolphin? even so bear in mind, that like i said before, i dont wanna CREATE a bottleneck.

i DONT expect you to review any/all of them. i can do that online. just recommend. thoughts..etc.

under 100 bucks...
