I currently am running dolphin on a Pentium Dual-core (wolfdale) at 3.5ghz. The only difference between a Pentium Dual-core and a C2D is the amount of cache in cpu the and in some cases SSE4. I have an extra 775 motherboard lying around that I can either by a cheap Pentium Dual-core to put in it or buy a C2D for the machine that has the overlocked Pentium Dual-core (wolfdale @ 3.5) mentioned above and and put my old cpu in the extra board.

What I would like to know is there an advantage between Pentium Dual-core and a C2D (using dolphin) at the same clock speed considering that they are identical chips except for the amount of cache.

Thanks in advanced.
Save up enough and go quad core imho

til then stick with what you have

I was under the impression that Dolphin only took advantage of dual core processors due to the nature of emulation. Is that assumption wrong or is this something that may be implemented in the future?
You are correct ! Dolphin is and will be as far as I know made for Dual Cores Cpus.
But If you change your CPU it s better to think a little about the rest of the use of your computer.I mean If you buy a Cpu only for dolphin then yes ,go for a e8400 or e8500 , if you plan to play games or just if you have the money and want a more"future proof "(dont have to change memory for ddr3 and motherboard to x58 ones For an i7 setup$$) Cpu then go for a q9550 ^^
^^ exactly

but another benefit of quad or tri core cpu's is 2 cores can be used for dolphinand one for other background tasks Tongue

(meh i always feel like a salesman on here now)
I'd rather buy i7 for the future.
if you go for i7 then , at least go for a 920 one , cauz they are socket 1366 , so you ll be able to update to i9 ( 6 cores ) , i7 8xx are like i5 socket 1166 and not futureproof at all !^^

Well thanks for all the opinions and info however I was not looking into buying a quad core cpu since all I really wanted was to get an extra motherboard I have up and running. I figured since I was buying a cpu anyways maybe I could get a slight upgrade for my media center PC and move the current cpu from the media center to a board that I have stored away in a box. This machine has nothing running in the background except for windows services and even they have been minimized greatly with some tweaking to the OS.

In this scenario I would be going to the this Cpu E7500 in my media center which is what I use Dolphin with. I would be coming from this E5200 which would in-turn go in my unused motherboard so my kids can use.

One of the advantages I can see from this small upgrade (since I have to buy a CPU anyways) is that the starting clock is higher then my current unit so I may be able to reach near 4ghz, which may be a bigger advantage in dolphin then a quad core machine. Or at least I believe it would be.
Id get what ever your budget fits but imho id go quad. If its just for Dolphin then as abfab said get the higher clocked dual like the e8400 for barely more than the e7500
Hello. I didn't want to start a new thread, but I wanted to ask about the Dual vs Quad Core issue. I have a Quad Core (Q8200), but I have the hopes of seeing Dolphin fully utilizing my GTX 260 and 4+ GB of RAM. Will this ever be done on Dolphin, or will the emulator always be stuck with only Dual Core support?
