What do you all think about the project trebble though. It seems google has been pushing SoC manufactures to update their drivers.

Treble isn't so much about encouraging people to update drivers, so much as allowing the separation of "android" updates and "device" updates.
"device" updates here includes all drivers, device-specific apps, vendor value add features and all that jazz. While I hope that means OEMs are more accepting to driver updates, it doesn't require that by any means.
I'm probably more interested in the proposed ability to have parallel graphics driver updates being pushed through the play store (and apps being opt-in to this makes it _much_ easier to get past any carrier testing requirements that slow all that stuff down right now)
