Is there any way to modify or create Mii characters? I can only use the stock 'Player' Miis and it looks crappy ....
If you don't want to dump your nand, you can use NUS downloader or dolphins iso extractor to get the channel was (named something like nigaoNR)

You'll need the either the mii maker channel or get a mii from your NAND I believe he is saying.

What I think he meant is that you can get the Mii Channel from a real NAND, a disc's update partition, or Nintendo's update servers. Though you can of course copy Miis from a real NAND too, if you already have any.
NUS Downloader is definitely the easiest way to do this.
