Even after deleting every trace of dolphin I can find through a file explorer before installing the latest version, The original dolphin version I installed months ago is somehow reinstalled when I exit the app and the new version is gone. My device is an Nvidia Shield TV.
Do you have auto-updates enabled on the Play Store?
If so,that is likely your problem seeing how infrequent the store version of Dolphin gets newer updates, and it could be confusing version numbers triggering the "update" to happen.
They should really patch in a per-app option for auto-update so you can avoid known confuse-able version number-ed,broken,or ruined updates like the newer MUCH crappier ES File Explorer version that lacks a dark theme option (I primarily use my SATV at night due to a non-good sleep schedule I have no control over) and its even worse about nag-screens on various tasks among other horrible things that haven't been openly found just yet,all thanks to it getting a change to new, likely greedy development owners.
Sorry for the rant,it just sucks that good and useful apps turn sour to big business by overly ad-hounding/cash grabs in several cases.
Though a lot of them start like that by default and get worse over time.

I do have auto updates enabled. I'll disable that and try again tonight. Thanks for you help! You're right about ES File Explorer though. That app is borderline unusable now. I've been using X-plore instead.

This did not fix the problem.
Do you use external storage for it or anything else of the app on external storage?
Android problems are so irritating sometimes, where trying to read/write storage often ends in a catastrophe.
I really don't know what's causing it then or how its happening, sorry.

So i discovered that if i open dolphin from the app manager section of my file explorer app (X-plore) then it still opens up the latest version. But if i open it from the leanback launcher it opens the old version I originally installed (4.0-5672). This is so weird..
I always go to the apps list in settings to access everything,at one point I had 2 versions side-by-side that kept switching placement order.
I was using a PR build along with the main build when the PR had some unique improvements (like Vulkan backend access) that could be looked at earlier.
Now I use the main builds again because Vulkan is available on it now and updates are getting better in some conditions.
That is a really annoying issue you are having, something so messy happening with app access should never be allowed to happen, but what can ya' do? *shrugs*

FYI, Dolphin has been purged from the Play Store a loooooong time ago. The only way of getting the Android version is through the builds on the Download page from our website or if you manually compile from source...
There are just two places dolphin stores anything:
/emulateod/storage/0/dolphin-emu
For all kind of savegames, screenshots, config. But dolphin itself isn't here.
Everything else is in the app directory itself and so pruned on uninstalling.
But I guess you've installed dolphin twice. Please go through the app list and remove it. We set another app name for debug builds, so they may look identical, but two versions may be installed at once.

There's nothing else that could be going on? I've deleted the app from settings->downloaded apps and the dolphin-emu folder multiple times, and every time i try to install the latest build, the older version comes back.
