I'm just curious what people here on the Dolphin forums think of the trailer for Super Mario Odyssey. There seems to be unanimous excitement for the new Zelda title but on Odysseys' Youtube trailer page there's quite a lot of criticism.

"Oh crap it's Mario '06." (Sonic '06 reference)

"If those are people then wtf is mario?!"

"the new GTA VI looks good even if personally I don't like the new art style"

"This is finally the sequel to Super Mario 64 that everyone wanted." (assumably sarcastic)

"Ey Luigi, you want to go bowling?" (GTA reference)

"I can't get over the fact that in the real world, Mario is only about 2 feet tall"

"Am I the only one who thinks this looks extremely weird and out of place. I mean the levels you go to look fine but the real world concept... looks so dumb"

Anyone remember Sonic '06? Surely it can't be that bad! I agree with that last comment though. There's been other humans besides Mario in other 3D Mario games, why do these humans look so different? Mario looks out of place. Do you guys think the city will be a big part of the game or maybe it's just for the trailer? It is a big part of the trailer, kinda reminds me of the Mario Run trailer. The other stages look more like Super Mario Galaxy 3 and they look exciting. Anyone else wish Nintendo had just made Super Mario Galaxy 3? Will Odyssey will be a good game? Is it to early to feel disappointed that this will be the game that introduces a new generation of kids to the Mario series?
One sentence : When will Nintendo stop milking Mario?
I miss my old days with NES , NES has so much good games ...
Imagine you play the same game every day , don't you get tired of them ? I would vomit
I'm not saying it's bad to make more Mario games but ...
Look at the Wii U library and compare it to the huge Wii library , you will know what I'm saying
For some reasons people focused on the real style urban level. It's just a level. Or some sort of HUB. Plus, it seems that this specific environment is a very good sandbox for Mario's moving possibilities.

I understand why people think about Sonic '06 but there is no need to worry.
Heeey! I'm only one optimist here! How am I supposed to fight all of this pessimism in two threads at the same time! Sad

Come on, it isn't out yet, give it a chance!
Maybe Nintendo should stop making 3D game and release more 2D side scrolling game , 2D game should take less time and money to invest and quite easy to make
Muramasa is a good example , it's the 5th best selling game on the Wii . Super Paper Mario is good as well (one of the best-selling games on the Wii)
Double Dragon would sell well if the make a sequel on the switch

Why should Nintendo stop milking Mario?  Just because Mario games have familiar characters and overall plots?  There was a lot of experimentation going on in the past Mario titles: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and 2.  I think new game mechanics and storylines in those games made them all unique.

The other worlds shown do make me optimistic! Buuuuut the whole jump roping in central park and fighting a robo-wiggler on what looks like the Empire State Building makes me concerned.  I just wanted to know what people thought before it was released.  Maybe I'll look back at this and laugh because it will be really good!

You clearly misunderstand what I'm saying

Nintendo @ E3 : We will unveil new games for the switch
Fan : Oh , yes , please!
Nintendo : New Mario and Zelda games....
Fan : what ? Not again , where is the new game we are waiting for?
Basically like that ...

Zelda BOTW is a good game . So i could praise Nintendo for making it but aside from that game and Xenoblade 2 , is there any game that worth playing ?
We can all agree that Breath of the Wild will be amazing. It certainly is for me. Best hype of 2017.

As for Super Mario Odyssey. I am a great fan of Mario. Titles such as Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, Super Mario 3D Land/World, Mario & Luigi, Mario Kart are all on my list of favorite games. Even Super Mario Sunshine is quite good (not as good as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy Through).

But when I look at Super Mario Odyssey... Well. The platforming looks as great as ever. No doubt that Nintendo is king at that. But the section with that New York City-like hub. I makes me doubt. Does Mario really need that? Mario is great as it is, but when Mario wants to compare itself with Open-World games, it will need to do a lot more than just jumping around in the human world. I am talking voice acting, quests, NPC reactions, interiors of buildings and everything else that Open-World games do these days. If Mario wants to be desperately an open-world game it needs to act like one. Which brings the question, why bother creating the human-world structure at all?

Sigh... I miss the days when simplicity was everything. Just jumping on Goombas and running around Bob-Omb Battlefield and be amazed of the size of the world. I guess we all expect new things from Nintendo (at least they managed to make A Link Between Worlds feel diverse and unique for a change, which is really great). I guess I have to see what the final products looks like. It is not the first time I have been ranting about Nintendo or technology in general (I guess it is sane to do so). Eventually it has to become a great game... Or so I hope. I really do.

Yeah... I am ranting about the Switch. Now about Super Mario Odyssey. At least I am not ranting about Breath of the Wild (how could I possibly!). See... This is why Dolphin is the best! The preservation of proved and timeless classics, but then in full HD and beyond!
Cheer up MayImilae, I'm also optimistic about Mario ^w^
