Well its not necessarily the emulator that is faster, it is simply the code in the game that the emulator is reading that is faster.  If you look at the chart from the above post, since the n64 had a weak processor, when it needed to render 3 or 4 copies of the same game at the same time, (split screen multiplayer) it simply would have only been able to do it at 15 frames per second or less.  Even today we see that in Mario Kart 8 on Wii U.  If you have more than 2 players the frame rate drops to 30 fps from 60.  Nintendo's solution was to double the game speed to keep the fps high enough that the game was playable.  Seriously, patch your rom and try it out, you will be like holy crap it plays exactly like it does on real hardware.
