I have found older versions of Dolphin still play games acceptably and get much better performance. I have a amd R9 m395 and quad core intel i5, and dolphin 4-5 cannot play games at all. I get 80fps and sound skipping. If I use Dolphin 3.5, I can play the games at 4x native resolution with AA.

That being said, I am willing to help you debug this issue. Smile

There will be no point of supporting user if you keep using old version . Don't drag your OSX issue here, the @OP is using Windows
Oh btw, my laptop can run pretty much all game at full speed with Dolphin 5.0 , it's just you who has issue with the OS rather than Dolphin 5.0
And for those who wonder how fast DX12 is
I'll drag it all across the board. Ban me. You people have no answer or help other than buy a better pc. Why does the old version work perfectly and the new one work badly? Is there an opengl extension missing? Or badly implemented? Why not actually just HELP ME FIND OUT?
We keep telling you to dual boot with bootcamp , why don't you get it ? And have we ever told you to buy a better PC ?
Like this guy here , we told him to use bootcamp and then bam! His Mac can run game decently on latest dolphin despite of having a weaker specs than yours
MAC is not made for gaming purpose and will never be. Gaming = Windows , Video Encoding = OSX

Also, please use the latest version , we no longer support Dolphin 4.0 xxxx
You didn't read the guide fully , did you ? Your GPU (GTX 950) is used by default but it does not run at maximum clock speed unless you force it by software (Nvidia CP) , same thing to your CPU

Alright so here are the changes I've made

- Went back to the newest version of Dolphin
- Changed settings in Graphics -> Basic; Backend = Direct3D 12 (experimental), Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M

Everything else atm is default, are there any other specific settings other than clocking that I should change, which will drastically improve performance? I don't mind not having the highest quality graphics, but semi-decent at least if it has good frames / not that choppy.

Right now I'm comparing my settings with the settings here: Dolphin Configuration Explanation (it wont let me copy the link, so here are the images), but this seems to be not the most updated version of Dolphin so I'm not sure if I should be following this

I think I was told once that I shouldn't mess with overclocking my computer if I don't know what I'm doing, is that true? Or will I be completely fine if I follow the instructions on https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-unofficial-laptop-performance-guide ?

Also when I was reading the instructions on that website, I didn't see anything about the overclocking option in Dolphin, which looks like this: http://imgur.com/a/yI0R4 , do I mess with that? If so what do I change?

Excuse my lack of knowledge, I don't have much experience in this and I'd like to make sure I don't break anything

Update: k...so ever since I changed the graphics and went to dolphin 5.0 its more choppy more often, and after a min or two it takes control of my gamecube controller (never done this before) and makes my keyboard stop working (never done this before), forcing me to unplug and re-plug it back into my computer so I can close Dolphin. I'm not sure if I misunderstood you, but is Direct3D 12 only better than OpenGL if I overclock or something? I just tried OpenGL again and it's just as choppy and ever since I messed with changes, now the "back" on the control stick doesn't work anymore, so that's great. I'm pretty sure the controller and keyboard issues are from Dolphin 5.0 because I went back to try Dolphin 4.0 - 7840 and my controller works and keyboard wasn't disabled.

So here's the differences between 4.0-7840 and 5.0
- 4.0-7840: either very choppy or very smooth (both audio & video)
- 5.0: consistently choppy (audio & video), keyboard disables after a few minutes, makes part of gamecube controller not work, player in-game moves on their own

Nah, you can't overclock a laptop CPU anyway. Only a few high end laptop support overclocking
All you can do is to use throttlestop to make sure your CPU doesn't throttle when you're playing game and the highest clock it can get is 2.5 GHz (2500MHz) which is still not fast enough for demanding games but that should be fine for light-weight game like NSMB , Muramasa etc...
Thottlestop also displays your CPU temp, if your CPU temp is way higher than 85C when gaming then don't use it

That has nothing to do with overclocking. You can change Wii/GC frequency with that option and it may break the game

Gotchya. Do you have any suggestions for me to at least have my games be berable? If there's no way to improve enough, I bought my gamecube controller PC adapter & 2 controllers for no reason :/

Here are pretty much the only games I play:

not until you can do something about your CPU/GPU . I bet both of them are seriously underclocked
Here , I underclock my CPU to 2.0GHz (2000MHz as you can see in the attachment) and game like Mario Sunshine still get more than 100% speed , no slowdown , no lag even though I run it at QHD resolution (2560x2112)

By "doing something about my CPU/GPU", are you saying my only option is to use ThrottleStop?

I see, so what's the point you're making by telling me you underclocked and you get good speed with Mario Sunshine?
As you doesn't give any info about your CPU , I have no idea what clock speed it is running at :/
Your CPU i5 5200U is an ultra low power CPU which is not quite the same as any "normal CPU"
It could run as low as 700MHz (0.7GHz) to save power and with this speed , most games are unplayable
By using throttlestop , you can control your CPU speed to any value you want .
Same deal to your GPU , you can't control your GPU speed unless you force it with Nvidia Control Panel
Please read the performance guide and try again
Edit : Btw , For Metroid Prime , 2.0GHz is not fast enough . You will need more GHz , 2.5GHz will do
