Well, seems I can't enter the forest of hope no matter what build I use
EDIT:
I also tried the PAL version just now, and despite all the trouble I see reported on the forum it seems to run just about as fine as the US version, although a bit slower. But the emulator still crashes on me during the Forest of Hope landing scene.
2nd EDIT just for the hell of it:
I finally figured this shit out! For some reason I had been playing with OpenAL audio all the time instead of DSound, sound in general is just much better now, and it doesn't crash!
Speeddymon it might be an issue of the memcard/exi state being saved within savestates. try moving/deleting the files in your save states directory, and don't use any savestates while playing. see if that helps.
also, use latest revision

This happened before I started using savestates, which is why I started using them..

I just finished compiling the latest rev now and I'm going to see if I can reproduce it.

Stay away from OpenAL on windows, DSound is really much better/faster, also the PAL version was fixed more or less recently and should now work as fine as the NTSC version

I love when other people hijack your threads...
Isn't this supposed to be just a general pikmin thread, for all help on Pikmin? I don't know why my sound was on OpenAL in the first place, but I'm sure other people who have this problem would want to know the solution.
Despite what the thread subject is, that does not make it a thread for all Pikmin related issues. If you want to make one for that, please feel free, but this thread was to report a specific problem (listed in the first post).
Sorry if what I said came across rudely, and you are right others would want to know the solution, but you should read the first post in a thread before assuming that the thread is for all help on pikmin.
In this case, since I'm not a developer and they were helping me because there was no other appropriate thread for my issue, it would have been more appropriate to make a new thread for your issue, something like Pikmin GC Crash or some such. I'll change the subject of this one to make it more clear.
EDIT: As an update to my OP, I have discovered since switching to SVN instead of using an unofficial build, that the 3 issues I mentioned previously are not related at all. Saves will stop working at any time, and the black screen thing can happen at any time, as it happened last night while sound and saves were both working for me.. I haven't gotten a sound cutout since getting r4435, so it's possible it was fixed. :-)
Anyways I've actually made an issue now in the google code tracker, issue 1559 regarding the memcard, so this thread can be closed.
