4K is no longer the future in my opinion, the GTX 1070 is $380 which is expensive but not as expensive as most computers.  It can play any Gamecube or Wii game at 4K UHD at 60fps.  It can also play new titles like Battlefield 1 at a darn good 40-60fps as well.  My 4K setup, including the monitor, cost less than a Mac Pro so it's definitely in the consumer ballpark.  4K tv's dominate the TV market too.

Ehm, a 4K 22 inches screen has a lower ppi than the 720p 6 inches screen of the switch.
Specifically a 4k 22" monitor has 200 ppi while the nintendo switch has 237 ppi. So if you find the picture quality in a 4k 22" monitor bad then guess what, the nintendo switch is even better than that. Specifically it has the same ppi as a 18,5 inches 4k monitor.

You're not taking viewing distance into account http://www.engineeringcalculator.net/home-theater-calculator.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display most people don't use their 4k 22 inch monitor less than 1 ft from their eyes, like they might use the Switch.  That being said 720p is still very good, it's just that it'll be noticeably worse than a 1080p display if you use it closer than 8 inches to your eyes.  I'm not saying Nintendo should've made the Switch have a higher res screen, all I'm saying is technically under semi-normal viewing conditions it could be better.

Another thought I had was maybe Nintendo could release a premium dock that could have it's own gpu so the Switch could output 4k.  Does anyone think that could be possible?  Maybe it could be possible to hack the Switch and make an app that would enable the Switch (plugged in with usb-c) to use the PC's gpu?

Which begs the question, do most people have an 4k monitor?

Seriously though, 8in is REALLY close! I hold my 3DS at around 18 inches away! You shouldn't really be looking at a screen that close to your eyes, no matter how high the dpi might be!

Except for Teletubbies that is. Kids just love Teletubbies, so all is fair. So that is something you and I both agree upon (your image shows so Smile).

I use my iPhone 6 Plus which is about the same size as the Switch at about 6-7 inches from my eyes is that abnormal?
The Switch's screen will be a bit bigger (6.2 versus 5.5).

And yes, that's not a good thing. It causes eye strain...

well regardless of it being a good thing, which I agree it probably isn't, I think plenty of people do it, especially kids haha

Eh, my Kindle Fire 8inch is sub-200 dpiand it works fine at a decent distance, if I held it that close it'd feel weird to use. The Switch is actually smaller than that, so I honestly don't think it'll be an issue - I use said tablet around the same distances the Switch would be used in Tablet mode, and I honestly only notice the pixels if I actually try to at less than 8 inches, as long as my face isn't physically touching the screen.

What is the general consensus on this? I'm near-sighted and I can't read things off my computer monitor or portable device unless it's very close. With my glasses it's fine but I don't wear those to bed. My 3DS is usually so close that the 3D doesn't work unless I move it away from my eyes. Sad
