If you have 20/20 vision or good prescription glasses/contacts you'll never want to go back to using a 1080p monitor again. I'm sure the Switch's display will be acceptable but it's much worse than a top-tier android or iPad/iPhone, again price is a factor and such comparisons are unfair.
Lol, I'm perfectly happy with the 1080p display on my OP3. It's 5.5 inches diagonally; why would you need more than that unless you're going to use it for VR?
These resolution-wars are freaking stupid, especially because if you want to actually use that 4K monitor for games you'll need a graphics card as expensive as most computers.
I agree that the world might not be completely ready for 4k yet. But it is the future. And new consoles should be the future. It is just that modern technology is expensive, 4k at least is. But eventually prices will go down and new technology will replace it.
I will upgrade my 1080p monitor in a few years... I certainly need a better graphics card to play with a 4k resolution. I doubt a NVidia GTX 960 can handle Dolphin at 4k. But when I do upgrade in a few years, it will be compactable with Dolphin and all my favorite titles in 4k. The question is, will Nintendo by then support 4k when it becomes the new standard. I suppose Nintendo will adapt 4k when the world is using 8k as the standard.
Why even bother? Wii proved to us that 1 generation late console can have fantastic games that people enjoy.

That's why we have Dolphin. You see, it is all about the games. Not the hardware. Dolphin does what Nintendo doesn't and can overcome the limitations of the hardware. Practically my Wii has been gathering dust since halfway through Dolphin 4.0.2.

The Switch does not have 5.5" diagonal it's 6.2", and it doesn't have the 1080p resolution you're happy with. You would definitely notice the difference between 720 and 1080 at a normal viewing distance using the Switch. Pixel density on the Switch's display definitely leaves more to be desired at that size from a technical standpoint.
4K is no longer the future in my opinion, the GTX 1070 is $380 which is expensive but not as expensive as most computers. It can play any Gamecube or Wii game at 4K UHD at 60fps. It can also play new titles like Battlefield 1 at a darn good 40-60fps as well. My 4K setup, including the monitor, cost less than a Mac Pro so it's definitely in the consumer ballpark. 4K tv's dominate the TV market too.

When you can only afford 500-600 pounds for the entire thing, yes it is expensive. That's not even counting the cost of the 4K monitor itself.
Oh, noes, the Switch is a smaller than my tablet and higher resolution, whatever shall I do?
720p is GREAT for a portable gaming device, and I'd rather have the extra battery life. They could have had it output in 1080p by running the chip at full power, but then it wouldn't last as long.
It's obvious we won't agree on that; none of our systems are above 1080p, we simply see no need for the huge extra cost.
I don't have a problem with 720p, I do however really wish my 3ds had a higher res

(480p plz)

Exactly. That's the stage where it really seems really bad to watch.
