I forgot to mention that in all cases I've been trying to connect, the version was matching on both ends. I got to test with a friend all those revisions:

5.0-321 on my gentoo box with 5.0-321 on his windows box - Failed to connect.

Same with 5.0 stable on both machines.

But 4.0-7840 on both machines worked. My friend reported that he couldn't connect Gentoo 5.0-321 from a WM into his 5.0-321 windows host.

After these things, I thought version mismatch was not the problem we were facing.

EDIT: Tested the last nightly revision 5.0-424 on both machines (my gentoo box and his windows box) and it is also failing to connect.
As an update, today I compiled version 5.0-753 and a friend on Windows downloaded it from the official site.
We could host/join successfully using the same version.

If he tried it with 5.0 (with me still on 5.0-753) it didn't work, as already said it wouldn't.
Don't know if something was fixed or if only now we're really using the same version... but now it's working!

Thanks for the help everybody, and if you had this problem to please try what we did and see if it works!

Edit: Does dolphin compare the version string when connecting? If so, I think this is what makes the Ubuntu PPA unable to connect, as it's "5.0-Git" and so not usually the same as the other player

Yes.
I received an email about it. Sorry guys, I'll not fix it. Dolphin relies in the git folder to generate the revision number, and I upload just the source to launchpad; don't count on me to upload git stuff there.
