Full Version: Looking at building a dedicated emulator box

Hello all.

My main PC (downstairs in a Study) is sporting an i7-4790k, 32gb DDR3 and is currently waiting for a Strix 1080 to become affordable/available.

I am looking at building a separate PC, with the main aim to run Dolphin in my bedroom upstairs.

It became quite apparent to me that my main system without a GPU can't handle 1080p at all, not surprisingly, so unfortunately there goes a high end CPU only system idea.

Given the 1150 sockets are getting harder to find (I'm in Australia btw), I am looking at doing something sooner rather than later. Seems wrong to have a 1151 socket in this build while my main PC is on a 'lowly' 1150. Also DDR3 is cheaper so that's a bonus.

So what would I really need to get this going?

A part of me is thinking to hold out for a presumed Nvidia 1060, given it's low power, and probably being incredibly well suited for a HTPC.

But in the meantime I could easily build a mini itx system, any sort of recommendations for CPU? While it will be primarily used for 1080p on a 60" Plasma, I do have 4K TVs I could shift it too temporarily. So some head room won't hurt.
I was about to rattle off the "standard" $325 USD emulator build that plays every emulator out there in 1080p with enhancements easy, but then you threw that curve ball with Australia. rip.

Maybe somebody more familiar with online retailers and Australia can help.

I'm happy to hear the merits of different sockets or CPU selections still. I should be ok to find most parts still.

Just seemed the 4790 is particularly good still for gaming so I figured I better get into it quick if I were to do this.
i3 6100 + GTX 750 ti can run most games full speed at 2560x2112 (4xIR)
Or a barebone PC Alienware Alpha : i3 4130T @ 2.9GHz + Maxwell GTX 860M (almost as fast as GTX 750Ti)

Thanks any merit to go for a higher end GPU, particularly if wanting to max all settings and possibly run 4k? Or is that still CPU dependent...
That CPU seems good with a high clock speed. On the current skylake range, should I only care for dual core higher clocks? Ie is a 3.2 quad slower than the 3.7 dual for instance purely for dolphin.

If it's just for dolphin, dual core is what matters most.

for 4k , you need GTX 1060 / RX 480
or GTX 970 / R9 390 at least

Thanks, genuinely thinking the 1060 is worth holding out for. You'd think performance of the 970 with less power usage, should be the ideal htpc card in general.
