Quote:Does the dell have easily upgradable ram? My current dead laptop has 8gbs of ram and it seems a shame to not upgrade that aspect. But If the ram can be upgraded then heck i might as well go with it.
You can upgrade everything except CPU and GPU
Quote:Oh crap never mind, the dell has no optical drive and would rather not full with an external one. So basically will http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01578ZKPO/ref=psdc_565108_t2_B015QZV9H6 this work? Keep in mind my budget is 1200 so a little extra cost won't bug me. just wanna ensure the higher ends will work without too much heat.
Huh ? Do you even check its screenshot ? It has only 1 heatsink !
These types of laptop are the worst for Dolphin . Crappy cooling units , components not accessible (it's hard to reapply thermal paste)...
So you need a built-in optical drive , right ? In that case , I would rather buy this laptop instead
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7278-clevo-n170rf-eta-jan-15th.html
Sager/Clevo is OEM . Clevo is much better than Dell , Asus , Acer , Lenovo... in term of price/performance ratio
Unlike that Asus , this laptop has 2 heatsinks in the back . It has better components for the cheaper price (i7 6700HQ + GTX 965M)
You can even customize the laptop to anything you want
Shit you're obnoxious. You tend to over estimate non-ULV throttling.
EDIT: Decided to do some testing since you're being annoying. I've never actually seen Dolphin throttle a CPU except in cheap 400 USD systems.
I ran ZTP in hyrule field for 5-10 minutes without the ZTP hack.
ULV CPU with a crappy heat dissipation (My lenovo system): Throttled by 200 mhz
ULV CPU with an okay heatsink and fan (Dell): No throttling. Fans kicked up significantly. System was warm.
Non-ULV CPU with okay heatsink and fan (Lenovo): No throttling. Fans sorta kicked in. - honestly I've never seen that system throttle even playing Battlefield 4 for extended periods of time.
ANYWAYS, OP, that system admin89 linked, while being annoying, is also pretty good and within your budget.
Power consumption of i7 6700HQ + GTX 9xxM will be like 120W . You will need a decent cooling unit for that
Our forum member @Garteal bought a similar Asus not long ago and it has 90 degree Celsius at full load
My laptop also has 1 heatsink and I have to add 2 more heatsinks to keep the temperature down

Already ordered the ASUS. I was far more inclined to take your word over his since I also thought he came off as obnoxious. Based on what you've stated it sounds like heat won't be a huge problem. If it becomes one I'll figure something out. I never play for long periods anyway. Is there an easy way to accurately measure temps?
OpenHardwareMonitor is pretty good.
Keep the receipt / invoice though, I imagine there's a refund policy on that amazon purchase?
Run the most intensive PC game you like to play for awhile and see if it starts to throttle. You'll know if it's throttling if your framerate drops significantly in the same area after awhile of it running. I suspect it'll be fine as that ASUS has better cooling than my Lenovo and I never actually saw throttling on it.
The laptop admin89 recommended isn't a bad idea by any means, separate heatsinks definitely help temps.
None of my games are top tier. My PC library mostly consists of games that came out between 2008-2011. Doubting any of these will stress it.
Then I highly doubt you will have an issue!
There are benchmarks you can download to make your CPU/GPU cry, but they're mostly useful for testing stability (From overclocking, for example)
Just keep ventilation good and you'll probably be okay.

lol I think wii emulation is the most demanding thing I'd do. I think I will test black ops 2 on max settings though
