After several hours of on-and-off blind prodding at google with no-one with the same issue without a totally different cause (and therefore solution) I've decided to just download VS2013 Pro, as that's also on my dreamspark and is apparently only 2GB.
Not sure yet - it was late, so I didn't get around to installing it yet.
Well I've installed it now, and the project doesn't work in VS2013. I'm going to try a fresh one in that version next.
Using the tutorial for hello world I linked earlier in VS2013 still results in the whole IDE freezing.
thats just weird as fuck. ill have to take a look myself later (or duing class later on..). im curious as fuck atm
The only thing I can think of is hardware acceleration causing issues. I remember having horrible issues with that on VS 2013 Ultimate. I can't think of anything else that would cause something like 7 lines of code to hang up.

with a hallo world console app? sounds like an odd thing
He probably meant hardware acceleration of VS2013 itself; not of the application being developed.
One thought I've had is that maybe the download from Dreamspark was bad, as it'd explain why everyone I know has had issues, but people on the internet seem to be fine. However, I'd forgotten it until just now when htis thread reminded me. I'll probably forget again, and can't do anything about it right now (I'm n my Ubuntu laptop, not my Windows desktop), so it'd help if someone could post something in this thread after me so I'll see it, even if it doesn't add to the discussion.
EDIT:Or I could just add it to my cloud-based to-do list.
