Hey guys, I heard a rumor from a little birdy that Cemu is using some of dolphin's code. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I'm working on getting proof/disproof as we speak.. My contact says it's operation relies on this code.

But, I thought that the Wii U is completely different from the Wii, what would they re-use from Dolphin?

And besides, isn't Dolphin open-source?

I've seen speculation several times, but never any proof. If you can confirm it, please post about it. Otherwise, I'll remain skeptical.

The PPC CPU is very similar between the two consoles, which is an important part. I don't think the rest would be of much use.

Yes, but because Dolphin uses the GNU GPL, using parts of Dolphin's code in a proprietary emulator like Cemu would be illegal. If the Cemu developers want to include code from Dolphin, Cemu needs to be distributed freely, following the terms of the GPL. (Of course, there are exceptions like fair use, but how much you can do with that is limited.)

and if they are just using the algorithm and not the code itself, it aint illegal.

I've gotten in contact with another person in the group that gave me the information and they backed the story. Still waiting for the hard evidence though. I've linked the thread so hopefully someone with more info will post.
As long as no one can take a look inside the code it should be hard to prove, eh?
Ouh yeah, lets **** the best emulator in years.
Wait Cemu is a commercial emu now?

not commercial ,  just proprietary.
It's not commercial, but that makes no difference to anything as far as the GPL is concerned - Red Hat Linux is open-source and managed under the GPL, but it's a commercial product. The issue is that GPL code requires that if you use it, you have to link to the source code so that anyone else can use it, too. As Cemu is closed-source, if it's reusing any of Dolphin's code, it's in violation of the GPL, so if there's any proof, Cemu is legally required to either stop existing, pay Dolphin's owner, The Dolphin Foundation, enough money to make them not complain, or open-source all of their code so far. They could go back to being closed-source once they reimplemented everything so it didn't use Dolphin's code, but they'd still have to have their older code out there, and that would allow anyone to see what, if any, dirty tricks they've been up to, and would also potentially allow Decaf, the other WiiU emulator, to make faster progress.
