If you want the original behaviour, select a 16:9 resolution and then use "stretch to window" instead of "16:9".

I was getting so excited that I figured something out too.  I'll do that then.  Thanks.

Why in god's name would want to stretch the game out? Either leave it as is or crop it.

I'll just crop it because I don't see any information getting lost while using it.

It depends upon the game. Some games were developed incorrectly and have the wrong AR when emulating how they would display on real hardware. Forcing them to display at 4:3 or 16:9 can correct the geometry. Some people might also just prefer to fill their screens with the wrong AR than to lose information by cropping. Not all distortion is noticeable by all people, so having parts of the HUD or other edge elements get cropped might be more irritating than stretching.

That won't happen (unless you're trying to do something extreme like cropping 4:3 game output to a 16:9 display). Games for the Wii and older consoles were designed so that the edges of the screen could be cropped, because some TVs (most CRTs) did that.

I'd like an example of a game that does this.

I would argue that PSO was developed incorrectly as well, as the HUD is squished using the GC AR.
Oh cool, who knew. You should start a list of games that need forcing.
