Your CPU run hot
CPU does not run at full speed : 3.5GHz
For only 3 mins , your cpu hit all the way up to 83 degree celsius (max = 91C !!!)which is hot . Try to stress your cpu for 15mins and run realtemp at the same time to see if the temp could go higher or not (i'm sure it will)
Your problem may relate to overheating issue
Btw , gtx 980m can handle up to 6xIR or 4xIR + AA .
Alright, I'll CPU test tomorrow. But I don't understand why my CPU is causing the issue--it runs fine at native. Does increasing the resolution also increase load on the CPU? It was my impression that IR was a purely GPU-related task.

Yup

Yes, if you're using EFB to RAM, which I assume that you are using since you're trying to play Super Mario Galaxy. All the EFB copies have to be synchronized with the CPU, and there's more work to do if the EFB is high-res.
Oh, thanks for the info. So basically my CPU becomes the bottleneck at high resolutions? There's not much I can do about that, is there? I guess I'll just have to settle for playing at a lower IR. I don't think I can overclock it, either.
EDIT: I don't have EFB to RAM enabled, but Galaxy does enable EFB access from CPU--I'm assuming that would have the same impact on my CPU? Also, I didn't mention this, but I am using the LLE recompiler for audio because HLE still doesn't work correctly with Galaxy--is that relevant at all?
Try replacing your thermal compound with a good aftermarket one. I got a lot of overheat issues with my laptop when I bought it, but after replacing the thermal compound I've never experienced those issues again. Yes, my CPU/GPU still get hot while playing Dolphin (around 75-85° C) but it doesn't throttle their clocks anymore, nor shut down suddenly when doing intensive tasks...

Err, right, that's the one that SMG uses... Don't trust me too much about this kind of stuff, because the graphics side isn't a part of Dolphin that I've worked on
I do think the performance impact applies to EFB access from CPU, though.

Yes, LLE will put a higher load on your CPU. In addition, Zelda µcode games like SMG can't run LLE on a separate thread, so the DSP emulation will bog down a core that already is busy. If HLE on Dolphin master doesn't work well, you could try a new-zelda-hle build instead, but sadly they haven't been updated in a few months...

OK. I did know about the Zelda μcode issue, but I guess I underestimated the load it puts on CPU, especially when the third thread is not an option. I didn't know about the new-zelda-hle branch, thanks a lot for letting me know about that. Is there some reason the changes haven't been merged with master/do you anticipate they will be in the near future?
EDIT: I just tried Galaxy on new-zelda-hle, but unfortunately, the problems that Galaxy has with HLE are still present there. It did run without any lag, though.

new-zelda-hle is a lot more accurate than master in general, but there are things that don't work at all because they haven't really been worked on. You can see the issues here:
https://code.google.com/p/dolphin-emu/issues/list?q=NZHLE
When it will be merged is a question of when more work will be done, and that's something I don't know about at all.
Alright, thanks a lot for the information. I guess I'll just suck it up for now.
