So, my brother is looking for a new laptop (not desktop, he really need a laptop)
We try to find a good and balanced one for maximum 900$. It will be used for games (and Dolphin).
With this price, we have the choice between 2 main configurations : i5 with "strong" GPU, or i7 with a weaker GPU.

What is better between :
- A dual-core i5 with GTX 960M.
- A quad-core i7 but with 940M.

Is dual-core still okey for long term gaming or should we take a quad-core?
Of course I know that Dolphin uses 2 cores max, and that 4 cores is still better because it helps with background tasks, etc...
Most i5 have 2 cores 4 threads, that should be a good compromise, but I heard hyperthreading is bad for Dolphin performance.

That dual core i5 is likely an ultra book class processor,  which is far less capable compared to normal high TDP i5's and i7's.  I would take the i7, as the 960M will go to waste with the CPU not being able to keep up.
Could you tell us the model numbers please ? There are many i5 , i7
Some i7 are weaker than i5 and vice versa
Check this out...

If I didn't order my Sager laptop last week, I would have snatched that up.

The i5 is always an ultra book (U) class processor,  as only the ultra book variants are dual core.  All other recent i5's are quad core.
It's in french, but I'm sure you can survive (specs are at the bottom of the page) :

i5:

http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00184953.html

i7:

http://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00185655.html

I said 900$ because usually, a 900$ PC in the US is sold at the same price, 900€, in Europe.

RTNDO128, it's very interesting, but I'm not sure if I can buy this from France. This model is not even available yet on the french Lenovo website. Plus, we're going to buy in August, so idk if the deal will still be available. But the idea of looking at deal websites is good, I will check if there are some in France.

I would just get the i7 models.  I know that 960M looks nice and good but you have no idea how slow that i5-4200H is going to be in comparison.  The 960M won't be using its full potential with that CPU paired to it.  Especially in emulation

What ? The ultrabook's CPU is i5 4200U ,i7 4650u ,i3 4005u ....The ultra book (U) class processor you're talking about is all power saving processor that has terribly slow clock speed like 1.5GHz
It's true that all mobile i5 are dual core but the i5 4210H is a powerful CPU which has base clock at 2.9GHz and maximum turbo of 3.5GHz . It's on par with desktop i3 4330

Again . You should do some research before posting stuff

Ah crap I read that as U instead of H.  Completely my bad. I'm stupid just disregard what I've said. 960M is an acceptable option.
So i5 H is okey, thanks for your anwsers :3
