Waiting for Bravely Second to come out. If it doesn't require anything greater than 9.2, I could just use RegionThree to play it as an import. But my kanji recognition sucks...

I'm at an impasse. I want to get a new game, but only one, and I'm torn between my decisions. Either destiny or FF: Type-0. I've heard good things about type 0 but I feel like Destiny would give me more hours of gameplay. Have any of you played Type 0? Is it particularly oustanding, or just OK?

I've played a little of it on the PSP and I liked what I've seen so far (holding off for the Steam release). It wasn't anything outstanding so far, but it was still good and different.
I haven't played Destiny, but from what I've seen it's been disappointing for people who were hyped for it and it's kinda short. Still with the new DLC that's coming (or is out already) you should get more play time and fun regardless.

Seeing as you like the Final Fantasy games, I'd say go for Final Fantasy, but then again, a different type of game might not be a bad idea...

Well, I wouldn't get destiny at all, but the only two reasons I'm considering it are that one of my friends is hounding for me to get it, and I don't have any other games where I can shoot people on the Xbone. I think I'll go with Type 0, I like different

OK, so i am playing through FFVII again, and i just got to the part where nanaki disguises himself as a human. not quite sure how they're going to pull that off in the remake. I mean, in the original, it's just silly and accepted, as many things in the game are downright silly. but now that the graphics are realistic, it'll be interesting to see how they change things to accommodate.

Finally beat Legend of Dragoon (underrated and overshadowed game) yesterday and damn was it fun. Forget handholding and warnings. Good ol' days.
I didn't realize I was so into the game and the cast until the credits start rolling, which is interesting considering that I only really cared about 3 out of the whole bunch.
The battle system is still one of the most interesting and fun ones that I've seen, but is admittedly a bit tricky to get used to when getting new Additions since you have to learn them on-the-fly.

Story-wise it was ok I guess. I'd say one of the better ones imo. But I'm usually fine with them. What matters most for me is the journey.

Yeah, I've heard some pretty good things about Legend of Dragoon. One of these days, I'll add it to my PS1 collection (I haven't even seriously begun collecting for that system just yet...) I dunno, it just seems hard not to have fun with PS1 era JRPGs, so I agree, I don't think the story for Legend of Dragoon will be a problem for me. Glad you enjoyed an old but good game

Personally, I'm knee-deep in Bravely Second. I've had it since April, but been busy with other games. It's more of the same, in my opinion, but that's a good thing. I loved Bravely Default thanks to all the combos of jobs and skills. Bravely Second is even more streamlined than Default, and you can chain together consecutive battles for more EXP, money, and job points. Makes grinding, even easier than before. I'm already 20+ levels higher than what the game recommends. And they added guns as weapons! And they're overpowered!

I bought Dragon Warrior I & II for the GBC last October, and I finally beat it last month. Obviously I was expecting the game to be primitive in terms of modern JRPGs, but it was rough. I mean, there was little indication where you were supposed to go next, or what exactly you had to do. Too many key items are simply invisible and hidden. And you can only hold like a dozen items at a time. Now, compare this to Dragon Warrior III on the GBC (which I also bought), it's night and day. There are obvious hints where to go next, and you really can't wander around aimlessly without completing certain events. I guess back on the NES, ENIX finally got the JRPG formula right on the third try. I mean, you can't blame them for I and II, since they were one of the firsts of the genre.

You can get it dirt-cheap on the PS store if you have PS3/4. Be prepared to pay big bucks if you want the original PS1 discs. Here they go for like €75~€99 second hand.
But I'd really recommend it to you.

It's nice to see some retro-gaming here. I've always liked the Dragon Warrior OST (randomly stumbled upon it) and the gameplay reminds me a lot of the old Phantasy Star games.
Been meaning to get back to retro aswell, but I got such a huge backlog of games and got to balance things between gaming and/or watching stuff.

Depending on how obscure (and even with), I still think there's some charm in em. My dad made his own walkthroughs back then of the NES games he played. He seemed to especially like the puzzles. It's quite impressive. I should probably scan them.

But nowadays (j)rpgs are theme parks where you go from a to b to c, etc. It'd be nice to have a different formula every now and then to refreshen up things. Couldn't hurt.

Currently in the middle of fire emblem fates conquest, then on to birthright and revelation.

It's like $25-$30 for the PS1 Greatest Hits version on eBay in the USA. I guess the PAL version was rarer? I like to have the originals for PS1 games, unless it's something crazy expensive (looking at you, Valkyrie Profile...)

It's not obnoxious in the Bravely series, unlike in other games. You can go wrong with chibi styles pretty quickly, but Default really grew on me. It's mainly just the 4 heroes you control that look like that. Everyone else has non-chibi proportions, and the character designs for NPCs are quite charming actually. There's a brief CGI video that plays in Second done in a 3D anime style (think a Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts opening), and it just looks... weird, probably because it looks nothing like the game

Yeah, I'm not feeling a lot from many current JRPG offerings. I could not care less about Star Ocean 5, for example. That series has been a bit of a train wreck ever since SO2 (I absolutely loved SO3, but everyone misunderstands the plot...) I bought Tales of Zestiria last year, and I still haven't been able to finish it. I dunno, it was just so mediocre in terms of plot, character dev. and gameplay. And the final boss requires some hit-stun gimmick that I can't figure out. Why can't I just hit him until he dies?

So I've mostly turned to my backlog. Most of them are older titles. For example, I beat Lunar Legend (GBA version, yes, not the Sega CD or PS1 versions, I don't care, and I loved it) and Luminous Arc 2. I mentioned that I beat Threads of Fate for the PS1, right? Great little gem. Quirky, but it's a solid game from the people who brought us Brave Fencer Musashi. I think I need to clear out my GBA backlog though (Sword of Mana, Yggdra Union, Fire Emblem, and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones).

Yeah, when I played Dragon Warrior I, I was all like "Awesome! No directions or instructions; this is like an open-world design in an NES game! Let's go exploring and see what we can do!" I can appreciate the freedom that game gives you, but it quickly becomes a drag when some of your objectives as literally invisible (basically tap A here on this tile that looks exactly like every other tile). It's not such a problem today; I just looked up strategy guides and maps on my phone. But back in the 80s and 90s, I guess you really, really needed Nintendo Power in those days.

Joking aside, hope you enjoy the game. Why Nintendo botched up the supply for the Special Editions so badly, I'll never understand (or forgive). Maybe one day I'll come across it and give it a shot.
