I played the 1st XIII on my 360. I liked it quite a bit despite all the hype and subsequent criticism it received. I just couldn't stand Vanille, but everything else was cool with me.
I didn't like Vanille or Fang. Terrible (and multiple?) accents. Story was OK, got me invested in a few characters but not an impressive script. The only characters I really liked were Sazh and Light. Other than that it was a good game
FFXIII's story could have been expanded upon, what with that whole concept of opening a door and trying to bring back something/someone vaguely resembling God. It was introduced way too late for it to form any sort of coherent motivation for the game's Big Bad, and it wasn't trumped up to be a real raison d'ĂȘtre. It was convoluted, so obviously I don't remember much about it.

I agree though, Lightning and Sazh were my favorites. Out of all the characters, I kind of connected with them the most. I know Snow and Hope both lose someone, but I dunno, Sazh just struck me more than the others (being a single dad is hard, I know a few). Lightning is just cool. She has a sword.
I've been playing through Bravely Default on my New 3DS XL. Ever since I was burned by Crisis Core, I've been a little wary of traditional RPGs, but a friend recommended it to me (and later gave it to me as a birthday gift!) and said that what I read was overblown. She was right! I'm really enjoying it! Big Grin
For DS Radiant Historia is also an interesting game. You jump between different timelines in order to reach a way to make the timeline have a good outcome for the story.
Yes, I enjoyed Bravely Default. Citra better hurry up so I can play it in 1080p Wink I loved the amount of strategy they give you with classes and their special abilities (spoiler: Stillness = Hax if you use it correctly). Biggest gripe is that the "true" ending is a pain to get. There's a bonus movie after the true ending that let's you use the gyroscope to look around (in every direction) while all the action happens. It's a very cool, brilliantly done as well. Bravely Default can get monotonous fairly quickly though, but it's still a solid game.

Funny Radiant Historia was mentioned. I bought that game last year and finished it. It really is a gem. Combat is well paced, enemies are always just at the right level of difficulty. The timeline plot was well executed too, very much enjoyed the story here. And goodness, the music! Yoko Shimomura's work is always top-notch.

That seems to be the archetype for RPGs across the board. I found myself not getting into games where the protagonist was not using a sword.
$protaganist is cool, look, $protaganist has a $bladedWeapon1

also $protaganist love interest is a $randomMagicClass that makes $protaganist even cooler!

Hey, how do you know the plot of the next Xenoblade game? Or for that matter, the plot of the next Dragon Warrior game? Or the next Bravely Default game? WHO ARE YOU?
