I would like to get the 4200M but... Iv had problems with fans/cooling in laptops before, I hope thats not an issue again... (is that why you suggested a desktop?)

A laptop with a 4200M is likely to have much better cooling than a laptop with a 4210U where they cut costs however they can.

That's always an issue with most laptops is dissipating the heat so it depends on the specific laptop. But still not the only reason I mentioned getting a Desktop.

The main reason was because of your budget. Laptops are very overpriced and underpowered as well.
However with the right can-do attitude an someone with knowledge of computer parts you can build a powerful and cheap desktop easily.

Most ULV CPUs are used in ultrabook and ultrabook's cooling unit is crap
i5 4200M will run most games full speed . Since you're are looking for a budget multi-media laptop , you should not buy a laptop that come with a discrete GPU , Intel HD 4600 is fine
Discrete GPU from AMD/Nvidia will add more heat to yours . Either desktop and laptop will face overheating issue if the thermal paste is dead . Thermal Paste is like your car's engine oil that you must change regularly .
OEM default thermal paste (TP) is utter crap . It will die very fast on laptop (6 months ->2 years depending on how often you use your laptop to play game) . You must wipe out OEM one and reapply aftermarket TP Arctic MX-4 which is known to last 8 years

Not always true . I bought new Fujitsu laptop for 364USD (made in Japan 100%) , it came with basic specs : i5 4300M @ 3.2GHz , 15.6" display 1366x768 , 2GB DDR3L 1600MHz , 320GB 5400rpm HDD
I doubt you could build sth better , not without monitor and keyboard anyway

That sounds kind of complicated (although helpful) but your saying that is only necessary with a more powerful video card? so if I go with the Intel HD 4600 I should be fine?

Im having a hard time deciding what to get tho because... I found a laptop for $400 (US) that includes i5-4200M and Intel HD 4600 but it is marked as "Used but Like New" which the price is perfect but Im not sure about buying used(although like new)... but if I save up and get a $600 laptop (new) I could get a more powerful GPU... but your telling me that will possibly over heat? So I guess I should stick with the $400 one even though its used its probably worth the price and fits my needs, and then I can get a better desktop next year

The Intel HD 4600 can hit 2-3x IR depending on the game.

I would be wary of that $600 computer. It's probably just a multi-media laptop with a graphics card shoved in. The CPU and GPU will share the same heatsink, causing the thermal issues. You need a dedicated gaming laptop that has a separate heatsink for the CPU and GPU, but those start at like $1000.

As long as the computer hasn't been stressed for long periods of time, it should be fine. Just replace the thermal paste and it should be a fine Dolphin machine.

Even with the Intel HD 4600? Iv never done that before, dont know anything about it... the $400 one seems like the one Ill go with tho

I dont really want to be opening up my new laptop and messing with it (or void the warranty) maybe I can do that with a desktop once I can afford a better one

If could link the OP a laptop with a 4300M new for cheaper than he can buy a laptop with a 4200M you'll be doing a fine job.
Unless your's was on offer or something.

The 4300M has a 200 Mhz higher turbo clock and a 100 Mhz faster iGPU turbo clock FYI.

The HD 4600 and the i5-4200M are on the same chip. So when you remove the heatsink, it is right there. You just take some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel and wipe off the old stuff, and then smear on the new stuff.

Its just removing the back cover and unscrewing the heatsink. Unless you try and pry something off that is still screwed down you can't break anything.

This shouldn't void the warranty, as there are manuals from the manufacturers on how to do this for at least Dell, HP, and Lenovo (the three laptop brands I've done this on).
