If modern PS3s don't have any hardware level emulation features and still manage to emulate the PS2 well then that is absolutely miraculous considering how slow the PPE is. The only thing I can possibly attribute that to is Sonys massive financial resources and direct access to the engineers who worked on the PS2 allowing for potentially amazing levels of optimization when combined. 3rd party open source devs don't exactly have that though so unless sony decides to make an official one I stand by my statement that it's unlikely to run well.

The PS4 uses an 8 core jaguar based design with a turbocore of 2.0GHz. Its per core speed is similar to the PPE in the PS3 actually. But it has 8 full fledged cores and the GPU and CPU both on the same die. It's amazing how little per core performance has grown on consoles over the last 15 years.

It is an amazing feat but still, I have a modded PS3 and so far the games I have tried (Jak 3 an SOTC) run horrible. Although it's kinda expected for SOTC to run bad. It's still an amazing game though.

I honestly can't wait until some new emulators start coming out and developers do some outside-the-box programming. Like using GPU cuda cores/compute cores for some of the bulk work. Like, Microsoft has an internal dev team working on an Xbox 360 emu for the XBone and I am really interested in hearing if they actually make any good progress but at the same time there is no way that thing will get any type of decent performance unless they harness the gpu or some other non-CPU source of processing(please don't say cloud).

Nintendo played it smart with backwords compatibility. It left them the option to re-release GC games on the VC, although they haven't yet and AFAIK don't have any plans to. I'd like to get my GC library on my WiiU.
It took lots SPU assembly and probably 10s of thousands of man hours if this is correct.

Those glitches are there because the emulator isn't fully accurate. Many games run perfectly, many run with minor problems, and many run with major problems. Similar to most emulators.

Using "the cloud" would introduce latency but would offer potentially more performance. GPGPU could only really be beneficial for GPU emulation. And for most things it's probably better to just use regular shaders like dolphin does.

As long as they can avoid the shader generation lag that Dolphin faces.

From what I understand the PS3s that are BC with PS2 games had extra hardware on the board. Its why they were more expensive. If they could simply brute force emulate PS2 games without any extra hardware, then all PS3s would be BC with PS2 games, and they're not. BC is a feature that most everyone wanted and if Sony could give it for free they would have. The issue with the BC systems, was it added extra cost to a system that Sony originally was taking a loss on by selling.

Its clear the PS4 doesn't have enough single thread performance for to run emulators for 6th gen systems. Unless someone can magically make emulators that use all 8 cores on that system.
They are all BC. Ever heard of CFW? The emulator was unlocked to use backups. You have to have a 3.55 PS3 though.

I think there's still a pretty big difference between a jaguar and a 200mhz SH-4.

The software ps2 emulator that comes with the ps3 is AWFUL. It's disabled for a very good reason.
Okay then...
