If it has to be now, then the Lenovo will be good enough. My friend has the y510p, and it's a decent computer.
As for buying an OS, you can try and get the code off the backside of your old computer

Yes, sadly it does because my classes will not wait and the only other laptop I have access to will not run Visual Studio or even connect to wifi, which are two requirements for my classes. Shame this didn't happen over the summer but I guess it wouldn't since I hardly use my laptop then.
It looks like I got one of the last Y410p's as well, shortly after I purchased one it disappeared from the product lineup. Glad I didn't wait any longer or my options just would have been more limited
I will post back here when I get it and report the results if anyone is interested.
Ok, so apparently the y410p isn't going to happen after all. Got an update email saying there was a shortage in parts, and given the fact it's a discontinued model I know that means high chance they're going to cancel anyway, so I went ahead and cancelled on my own terms.
My dad apparently had a $100 newegg gift card so I was able to take my pick from their laptops around $1000 instead of $900, and I went with this, which has the newer processor and graphics, and supposedly runs much cooler:

Anyone had any experience with this laptop? I'm familiar with Asus (my last one was an Asus and I have several Asus components and even an Eeebox), so I know they make decent quality stuff. I was also looking at the MSI GE60 Apache 469, but I kept hearing about how the laptop has cooling issues (temps up to 90C is NOT okay!), so I skipped on that even though it was almost $100 cheaper.
(P.S. I did take a look at that Sager laptop you linked to me, but didn't see any of them on Newegg)
Well it's the single heatsink issue, so what I said before about running dolphin with the Intel HD and then PC games with the Nvidia still stands

Otherwise it should be fine. If you notice temps are high, get some new thermal paste and put it on the CPU and GPU.
And yeah, Sager isn't on newegg because they're a brand that specializes in being super customize able.

Right, it should be no problem. From what I've read the Haswell HD Graphics run Dolphin with enough overhead to spare, even to the point of being able to bump up the IR a bit (up to 3x I think?). And I've got some Arctic Silver 5 I'll be applying, plus my high-airflow notebook cooler. It should run in the low 70s if all goes well, which is acceptable to me. I can also adjust the fan speed curve on the Asus, unlike Lenovo which had it locked down.
In the meantime, I'm probably suffering from Dolphin withdrawal lol, found myself trying to get it running on a T4400 with Radeon 4330 graphics...that's not going to cut it at all xD
Yes, depending on the game, you can get between 2-3x IR
And those other things are good

Ok, so I got my laptop in today and it works alright. Runs excellent in D3D mode, but for some reason I can't get vsync to work in OpenGL. It's just alright because OpenGL typically runs better and allows more graphics effects (I can get up to 3x IR and AA/AF on low in OpenGL, just 1xIR and 2x AA in D3D mode). This a hardware thing or a software bug I might have missed? I'm running the latest version, build 3260. I made sure the dedicated GPU is running, nvidia's control panel is set to always use the GTX 850M when running Dolphin and MSI Afterburner shows GPU activity. Oddly enough the activity is only around 20%, so I can't see why it's lagging so bad (CPU only around 50-60% on the most used core too, while it goes to 60% GPU and 70-85% CPU on OpenGL and runs fine).
Otherwise thermals are great stock, even without my external cooling fan. Dolphin will only heat up the GPU to 50-56C, CPU no higher than 75C, with an average in the 68-72C range. Even a synthetic benchmark shows good temps, Furmark gets it up to 79C and Prime95 gets CPU to 80C, it's only when I run both at full that I get any sort of thermal throttling (once the CPU hits 92C, for the record the GPU is also pretty high up there at 87C too) and even then it's very minimal, with a small dip every 45-60 seconds or so. Considering that's the worst case and extended periods of 100% CPU and GPU will almost never happen in real-world use, I'm pretty happy with the results. Took a look inside and even though it's just one fan, it's one of the larger ones that moves a lot of air, plus it's got a copper heatsink so the cooling is well-designed here. On the dual-fans side, I took a look at some reviews of the N550JK, which is the "dual-cooling" version of this laptop with the same specs, and it actually does a worse job cooing since the vents are just tiny and blocked by the screen. All things considered, I'd take one large fan and a copper heatsink that cools well over two small fans and an aluminum heatsink that doesn't do the job any day.
