I already get that speed using the z64 plugins, which is as good as I ever graphically got Mario Tennis to run, so the SW rasterizer actually wouldn't be so bad, relatively speaking of course :p
Actually, the software rasterizer is LLE and pixel-perfect, right down to the VI filters like divot filtering and gamma emulation. So thats as best as you can get, and beats z64 in accuracy by a huge margin.
You misread me. I mean using the z64 plugin was the best I've been able to run this game graphically to date at the same speed you mentioned the software rasterizer runs. So running the software rasterizer is not so bad since that's a speed I'm used to. So essentially, speed isn't an issue or a caveat, not for me.

You got me curious about this one. As I know the N64 emu scene, it doesn't happen to be open-source, does it? [couldn't find anything from quick googling]
It is open source, however i have no idea where the source is, HatCat seems to be doing most the work over at the Project64 forums
http://forum.pj64-emu.com/showthread.php?t=4422 It's a modified Angrylion RDP
RPGMaster is also doing a lot of work, i'm sure if you asked one of them they'd happily get you on board. For HLE video you can use RiceVideo or hell Jabo3D which is in the Project64 source. I'd love you forever if you can fix up this emulator
Source of Project64:

If you coordinate with RPGMaster you may want to jump to 1964, he's been trying to spruce that up

This was never done, zilmar never had the source to them so were they were never released
ExtremeDude2, Project64 is open source as of
version 2.0. This has been the case for over a year now.
That doesn't have anything to do with the plugins, I just said that zilmar doesn't have the source
So the plugins have the secret sauce? Glad I spark such a nice conversation. Does Wii emulation just simple have far more developers or is it lack of knowing how the N64 works?
