Recently I noticed that the number of new users filling their profiles with incomplete info (such as CPU: Intel, GPU: nVidia, etc) is increasing, and I had a little idea that may be easy to implement. What if at least the CPU and GPU fields were replaced by a drop-down list with all models, forcing the user to choose one to proceed in user creation? This way we would be sure that valid info is present in the user profile...
Would need to link to something to figure out what their hardware is, though, wouldn't you? I'm pretty sure that almost any Linux user would know their hardware, so you would really only need to provide for Windows and Mac users. Even if there's an odd one out among the Linux users, they'd probably learned how to search for things when they need to know them, if they're downloading an emulator.
People will just select the first option.
Oh, and you can't forget that you can never have all existing hardware cataloged, or that people with convoluted or different operating modes (like myself) would be cast out of giving accurate summarizations of each part.

Huge lists... You know how long they'd be, even if we only included the past 3 generations of Intel and AMD hardware for CPUs? GPUs would be better, but only slightly. It might be a turnoff to people, even if they do know exactly what's inside their PC.
If we were to take any action, it should probably be something simpler. Perhaps something like sending a PM to all new registered users explaining how to correctly make sure to fill out profile info (and how to follow the rest of the rules in general!) with instructions on how to do that (Windows Control Panel for most). The "you have a new PM!!!" little tag that appears when you get a PM is usually urgent enough for me, so it could work for new users. It won't guarantee that the info gets filled out, but we can at least say we tried when we close their threads.
EDIT: It's not like I'm saying my idea's the way to go and all. If forum staff feels this issue needs changes to how we do things, we really should discuss it. I encourage everyone to throw their ideas and comments.
