No I know it has lore and all(and a full blown language I think), I'm just saying that it's story didn't have a big impact on me. I beat ME3 this past tuesday and the ending killed me after putting 70+ hours into the trilogy. With Skyrim or any ES game I don't get that feeling.
Despite the impression that it's XBL gamers might give, I really do believe Halo has an impressive story. They have a lot of background and an expansive universe. It's expanded from everything to books, graphic novels, web series, and now a TV series. Get your friend to play Halo's campaigns (play with your friend in Co-Op if he sucks at FPS games, which may be the case if he really is a neophyte to gaming). Bungie genuinely cared about their Solo/Offline experience, even as they themselves helped usher in an new era of online gaming when Halo 2 came out. If he doesn't want to play, just force him to listen to the OSTs for Reach and 1-3, it's almost as good as playing the games. :p

Is the Illusion of Gaia a good choice for what I described? I've never played it
Yes, zelda games have a much deeper story than tetris too.
I love zelda games as much as the next girl, but not because of their story.
Games like Xenoblade, the Final Fantasy series, Tales of *, The Elder Scrolls, etc are probably what he wants.

Illusion of Gaia is very good yes. A hidden gem in the SNES library. Though if you're going to recommend a SNES game, then why don't you start with Chrono Trigger?
I would recommend Rayman Legends. The story isn't the best but the gameplay is so fucking funny and fluid...

Lore has very little to do with story.
Out of the ones you listed I would say Mass effect is the strongest story/plot wise. It's well written and focused. Dragon age, fallout, and elder scrolls are really a bunch of tiny stories for quests, most of which are very basic.
If he likes sci-fi, even just star wars or star trek, I would highly recommend mass effect. It is thought provoking and very satisfying. Once you get to the rising action part of the plot it's like a good book, you can't put it down.
Even though it's ancient at this point, I still recommend Knights of the Old Republic. It's an incredible game. It has some issues on Win7 x64 though...

Not when it comes to the elder scrolls. You basically live through the lore. Of course you actually have to pay attention to the story because not every single detail is spoon fed to you.

Kotor 2 was amazing at least to me. I started Kotor 1 but never finished it.

I still have it.
The kid's laptop is an Asus with Intel Celeron, 2GB of Ram, and Windows 8. So I was looking for a N64 and below game to emulate. Mass effect wouldn't exactly be fun on his computer.
Also he has barely watched movies. He doesn't know if he even likes Star Wars because he's never seen it. He needs to at least try this stuff. That's why I want to get him interested in video games. I know it's something he would love, but he has never tried it.

Knights of the Old Republic would be perfect

. It's from 2003, surely even his craptop could handle it.
