A cheaper kit type cooler, such as a Corsair H100 is only a few percent better than a good air cooler, but costs far more. It's not worth the investment unless you're going all in, and even then it's only worth it if you're doing really serious overclocking or want your rig to look nice.

Yes, what you have said above is all true. I went from a Noctua D14 to a Corsair H110. It is not that much quieter and not that much cooler, but it did cost a lot more. AIO water coolers take up less space inside the case and are lighter and easier to install - all of which make for better air flow inside the case for the other components like HDD, GPU, VRM, southbridge etc.

The other thing that is not all that well known is heat is no longer the main limiting factor when overclocking. It is now all marketing that sells the AIO water coolers.
Since when is heat not the main limiting factor for OC in every modern cpu?

AnyOldName3 Wrote:Ideally, I'd plug it in, then navigate to it in Windows explorer, then use it like any other USB hard drive. This works on the new laptop under Win8, uBuntu and through the bootloader. Under Windows 7 on my desktop it says it can't find a driver and then doesn't work.

Probably because there are no win 7 drivers. Look it up, idk.

DatKid20 Wrote:Did anyone know that the reason Kaveri sometimes lost to richland in benchmarks was because it throttled? The reason it throttled is because it was made for mobile first and temperatures that would be okay for Desktop were bad for mobile and so it throttled to 3.0ghz whenever a game was played or something that stressed the igpu.

Source?

That makes no sense. Laptops tolerate higher chip temps than desktops due to better chip packaging techniques and lower voltages. Unless you're referring to the TDP. But if it was capped at a laptop TDP that would cause terrible performance under every scenario.

As for stressing the IGP causing drops in cpu performance, that happens with nearly every modern cpu. Power is delegated to different parts of the chip based on load and a max TDP. In may have been a particularly bad issue for kaveri due to its enormous IGP and/or shitty turbocore implementation. But that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with mobile vs. desktop parts.

There's a source. I found it out while searching about the 860k however.
Ok so your source is a forum thread in which they confirm this is normal behavior for turbocore. Also they don't mention anything about mobile versions or throttling based on temperature (only TDP).
That wasn't the source I was talking about. I found it while searching about the 860k and if you've ever google searched it there's not many relevant results.

I need different drivers for different USB drives? That sounds crazy. I remember installing a USB drive driver on a windows 98 computer years ago, and after that it'd use any USB drive. Also, I've successfully booted from it on the laptop, so it can't be that complicated if BIOS can talk to it, surely?

I did look it up, but could never find anyone that had got it working on only certain devices - if someone had the issue I have under 7 they had it everywhere else too.
It should be plug and play with any modern OS but if you're telling me that it's missing drivers then clearly it's missing drivers. Have you tried it on both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports?

@DatKid20

Ok well then either find me the source or I'll be forced to continue operating under the assumption that this is just the result of someone (whoever your source is) posting something retarded on the internet without checking it.

Dug through my history and found it.
I skimmed it and ctrl + f for relevant terms and it seems they pretty much reached the exact same conclusion as me and the people in that other thread.
