Why did you point out a link about the Wii U selling badly and talk about the 3DS as if it's going to die? You do realize the 3DS is selling amazing right?http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/01/nintendo_boasts_of_record_setting_3ds_sales_in_2013_and_confirms_yoshirs_new_island_release_date

Plus Nintendo has a massive cash reserve of 14 billion dollars in pure currency thanks to the Wii. Of course none of this saves the Wii U, but it means that the Wii U won't tank Nintendo no matter how badly it does. Nintendo's big problem right now is not "surviving", it's making sure it doesn't become irrelevant in the console space so that the Wii U's successor has a chance. They can't pull out new hardware this early, as Sega taught everyone what happens if you do, so Nintendo needs to buckle down and ride the Wii U through as best as they can so they have as much momentum as possible for the next cycle.

I'm really getting sick of all this Nintendo dooms day crap. The situation is complicated and should be judged with all the factors, not histrionics and catchy headlines.

That last part was a wish of mine. I never said anything about the sales of the 3DS or the Wii U as I really could care less about them. I just want Nintendo to stop making underpowered consoles and I put that link up to show how making underpowered consoles is bad. Also Nintendo 3DS sales are good but not as good as Nintendo expected.
Nintendo is just putting the theory of the weakest console wins to the test. Looks the caveat is you can only be a little bit weaker than the previous gen's best.
@DatKid20 - The 3DS is still basically printing money for Nintendo. Even though it may not have met Nintendo's projections, "not as good as we had hoped" still translates into "better than most companies could ever dream about". Seriously, most companies would probably wish they had a product as viable in their market as the 3DS.

Personally I find it somewhat surprising that they have this much success in a portable handheld given the competition they face from modern mobile gaming (phones/tablets).

It's all about price, higher specs means we'll be seeing Nintendo release a console that will probably be in the same price range as the Xbone or PS4, and without massive 3rd party support it's too big of a risk to take. Nintendo are already well aware that 50% of people who will buy a Wii U are people who buy either an Xbone or a PS4 and have some leftover cash to buy a 2nd console, this is one of the major reasons why the Wii sold so many units.

Not even close. Most people who buy a Xbone or a PS4 usually trash the Wii U or don't care about it. That's why it's sales are so horrible. People were picking last gen consoles over it which is just embarrassing. The Wii U has no games that could justify picking it over a Xbox 360/PS3. I wish the Wii U would just die. The 3DS is awesome though. I got one the year it came out in America after the $169 price cut.

Any first party nintendo game is reason enough to want one and easily buy one over a xbox or ps3. Many developers have also stated that the wii u is between the xbox/ps3 and next gen consoles in power, leaning slightly more towards the current gen consoles. Ubisoft has already stated that watch dogs will look better on WiiU than on the current gen platforms and need for speed most wanted also had better graphics than current gen. Remember the WiiU is just past its first year and developers haven't paid much attention to it(with many of them dropping support for it unfortunately), when developers learn the hardware better and can optimize like they do on current gen systems the graphics on it will improve and have more next-gen like games. I'm not saying it will be ps4 or xbone level, I'm only saying it's in a lot better position than what you're making it out to be. Why do you want it to die though?
Just you wait until Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 comes out. People were saying the same with the 3DS.

And look what it's now.

It's underpowered as usual. It's what the Wii should have been last gen not this gen. (Current gen is PS4/Xbone) It would be way better if developers had any interest in it. Numbers can prove how horrible it is so let me tell you the numbers. The Wii U has been out for a year and the Estimate from November is 4.3 Million. The PS4 has been out for 3 months and sold 4.2 million in its first month. The Xbone has been out for 3 months and has sold 3 million Xbones in its 3 months. This means the Wii U sells about .358 million units per month, the PS4 sells about 4.2 million per month and the Xbone sells about 1 million per month. That's pretty bad.

The 3DS has always been selling well ever since the price cut. Before the price cut it wasn't selling enough to turn a profit at all. After it 3DSs started selling like crazy.
Your numbers are wrong.

http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/

Wii U - 5.34 million
PS4 - 4.38 million
Xbox One - 3.11 million

It is inevitable that the PS4 and Xbox One will surpass the Wii U at current trends. Nevertheless, your statements are just dead wrong.

And the PS4 did NOT sell 4.2 million in it's first month. It sold 1.5 million, which is AMAZING, but 4.2 million in one month is beyond the capabilities of any console launch. Even being able to sell a million on the first month is a record breaking achievement in distribution technology. Getting that many consoles onto store shelves all at once is HARD.

By December 28th it sold 4.2 million. I said 1 month not it's first month (Which you probably counted as only November.)
