Main reason I imagine is, it's totally akin to the original medium -the manga-; first FMA series had indeed good reputation as well back then, but as one would imagine manga was still ongoing and they had to come with an out-of-the-sleeve ending for the series.
Also, as a curious fact, both manga and FMA:B anime ended *exactly* the same day (as of release days, that is). That's what one should call good cooperation between companies.
As for my case, it was perhaps the most decent "shounen" type (and last one for me) I came with in the last years. Obviously with its due flaws, but in general not bad.

@Jack Frost:
Monster anime is practically a "verbose" (page to page, frame by frame, not sure how to call it) adaptation from the manga, which adds yet another plus to it.
For some reason cannot say I'm very eager to try the first 2 you mentioned, but Pluto could be interesting.

Also, forgot some few in the list:
Noein* (anime); Midori the Camellia Girl (only tried the manga); Abstraction (manga, by Shintaro Kago).
It's a matter of taste, really. I've pushed Erased on to watch it later rather than sooner, but I wasn't disappointed; and Break Blade was pretty much a random hit becoming a gem. YMMV.
My brother just told me he started watching DB for the first time :O I don't think he has ever watched anime before other than a few random DBZ/Super stuff.
Started watching Scum's Wish (Kuzu no Honkai).
GOD this anime is GOOD.
Anybody remember Last Exile? Watching it now with my sis. Been years since I watched it, but I forgot how good it was. Still got the whole DVD set that I bought waaay back when...
Just saw Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) last Sunday.
My heart wasn't ready. This is a masterpiece.

Still waiting for that US release...
Oh it's still not out yet in the US? In France it's released since late December. Many cinemas don't schedule it tho, I had to move to another city to watch it. It was totally worth it.

Oh boy, what's awaits you is colossal.
We have to wait until April 7th
