The way you had it vertically looks backwards to me – check which way the fan pushes the air, then point that side towards the back.

I disagree. The only way to ensure that the paste covers the entire surface is to spread it before putting the HSF on.

The ideal way to do it is with a flat tool like a knife. I just use my finger though.

JT! Wrote:So... how much thermal paste do I put on this thing? I've been watching youtube videos and some people say the size of a pea, some say the size of a lentil/ grain of rice.

However much you need. That's the honest answer. It depends. You just want a very thin coat across the entire surface. However much you need to do that is the amount you need. I would say it's closer to the size of a grain of rice in most cases. It depends on how big the cpu IHS is though (that metal cover on the top that you're spreading it on).

Honestly stop worrying about it. A little bit too much or too little is not a big deal. Same goes for application. If you secure the HSF tightly it tends to spread around any excess anyways so it basically self corrects to some degree. And as long as you're using a paste that does not conduct electricity it's ok if a little bit leaks out. It's pretty unlikely that you'll fuck it up badly enough to where it has a significant effect on temperature. It doesn't need to be perfect.

Paul is right. Vertical for sure. And like he said check to make sure the fan is pushing the air towards the exhaust, not the other way.

Yer, I shouldn't have said that :p
So pretty much everything got put together great.

Only problem I have now is for some reason I don't have permission to access my user folder from my old HDD.

It says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder - Click continue to permanently get access to this folder." And when I do, the progress bar just keeps working along and nothing happens.

I tried googeling but nothing seems to have worked.
Are you trying to copy data from an old windows install from within windows? Yeah just boot into a linux live distro and copy the data you need from in there. Then wipe the drive. In the future you should probably move your data onto an external drive before you reinstall windows.

Or just do something like this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

I found a few solutions from googling it. Which ones have you tried?
No, when I had my laptop, I had a normal HDD. The I switched it out to a SSD, fresh windows install on that. Then I used the old HDD to store all my pics vids etc. Now that I've formatted the SSD and transferred that as well as my old laptop HDD (which for now is still external) I can't access my user folder. (I do still have windows installed on the HDD though).
So in other words I was right.....

But the laptop didn't give you any trouble accessing the user folder in your old HDD?

I've sorted it out now. I have an AppData folder with hundreds of thousands of files in it. It's caused me all kind of problems with transferring, and I think the issue was is I just didn't let it do it's thing for long enough. I'll get it going overnight, it'll probably take hours.
By hours you surely mean minutes, right? Right!?!

1. Download linux
2. Put linux on flash drive
3. Boot to linux from BIOS
4. Copy data
5. Format drive

It's not that hard.
No, when I did a backup before installing the SSD in my laptop, the transfer rate was 3kb/sec. Turns out it was appdata that hand a crazy amount of files, and I read that copying tiny files takes a long time for HDD when compared to big video files. It was confirmed when it had copied 25% of the files, but the progress bar was at around 10%.

I don't think it had anything to do with windows still being installed on that drive.

I don't really get why I need to bother with linux. I have windows installed fine on the SSD. Huh Or did you mean me to do that just to get around the access denied thing?

But yeah what I will do is get my user folder off there, copy it and wipe the drive clean and then put my user folder back.

Anyway, the computer got built somewhat trouble free. I was actually quite clueless as to how I was supposed to connect the SSD and HHD but I figured it out.

Thank you so much for all the help NV and ExtremeDude2 too! I'll make a new topic when I'm ready to buy a graphics card. Maybe sooner than later depending on how Dolphin runs with just the onboard.
