The trick is not needed anymore in current builds, since the function got changed etc..
However older builds (e.g. r4717) with the savestate hack applied are around 10-20% faster @mario kart than current builds.
are you sure it was 4717 cuz i downloaded it,tried mario kart with savestat hack and i get graphical errors

You can use any version before Ectors change in r4854 @optimize quantizers. I could even play with 2 players in decent speed @1280x720 like that most of the time.
Well i just got mario kart (PAL) played it and everything worked fine first time around, however i came to play it the next day and opened it up and went to play and all the buttons that were set worked fine dont anymore.
I checked the button configuration incase they had changed and all was still the same. I loaded mario bros and that still works fine, but mario kart doesnt,
I am using the xbox 360 controller. does anyone know why the buttons have changed or could let me know how to set it up properly for this game.

try changing emulated extension to classic controller
I tried that and the controller became usless, I checked that the button config was correct in that mode and still nothing.

So I'm playing this and while it works, the frame rate isn't so hot. Any general suggestions that help with speed up? My specs are:
