With Linux , yes... NaturalViolence is correct
Yeah definitely don't go with an AMD card on Linux. Even after all these years of non-stop moaning to AMD about their drivers on Linux they're still a pile of crap. :-(
Thanks all. I'm definitely going to be running windows. Is it worth it, cost-to-performance wise, to go to higher than a 7870 or 660?
For dolphin no.
I'd go with AMD only because of better fabrication. Plus AMD on average offers better performance for the dollar then nvidia. Plus you may or may not run into this but AMD cards on average perform better with Open GL. Which if you go on Open GL forums sites a few people have issues with nvidia cards and I never heard of complaints from ATI owners. But that said good luck with your build.
I got an Asus GTX660 DCII OC and it is a very cool and quiet card. It runs like a champ in Dolphin.

I have this same card, and it's great for the $168 I spent on it. Idles ~4°C above ambient, and maxes out at ~34°C. It's very quiet too. In Dolphin I can do 1920x1080 with at least 4x SSAA in all games I've tried.
Oh wow good price for that card. I paid $150 including shipping for my GTX 470. I'm kind of jealous.
