I now keep on getting problems with the sound, as it keeps on crackling when I play for about an hour.
Do you have vsync enabled? If so, try disabling it and let us know the result.
The only thinks I have enabled in General Graphics are "Show FPS" and "Hide Mouse Cursor".

You're comparing apples to oranges there. A comparison across different builds is only useful if you use the same video backend.
